Is Estrogen Making Me CRAZY?

Hello All!

I started taking Estradiol (oral) and progestin a little over week ago. I'm wondering if it is "causing" my anxiousness and mood swings.......

Prior to surgery, I have always been high anxiety, moody, etc. For the first 7 weeks after surgery, I felt very even keeled.......so to speak..........no mood swings, no anxiousness. My only complaint was pretty severe fatigue.
Since starting the HRT, I swear I have been so moody and that old familiar anxious feeling in the pit of my stomach is back!

I also know that it could be that I'm getting more and more into the "swing of things", back to work and life.

So I guess my question is, can the HRT make me more moody? Can too much estrogen cause me to feel like this crazy person?

Oh yeah, in addition, for two years prior to surgery, I've had awful insomnia. From week 3 post op until last week (when I started HRT) I've been sleeping through the night, no problem! NOW, I've got awful insomnia again!! Coincidence?

Thanks ladies!!!

Christine

Is Estrogen Making Me CRAZY?

I believe so -- I'm back to having those darned headaches! What are you taking and how much? I was using over the counter tri-estrogen cream (hoping to get a prescription last Friday), but...the doc wanted me to try "other things" first -- namely Divigel or Estrogel or Vivelle-dot. I have had a headache off and on since then (no headaches while on the otc cream -- AND no sweats!) Now I'm a little sweaty from time to time as well! I'm also more edgy (of course having sick headaches doesn't help, does it?)
Ughh...
Sorry, I wasn't much help -- just commisurating (sp?)

Is Estrogen Making Me CRAZY?

Too much estrogen can make me very anxious. However, I would suspect the progestin before the estrogen. Maybe you could drop the progestin for a trial period of time to see if that helps. I know you need it because of the endo, but you could do it just for a short period of time. If that helps, you might try asking for prometrium and just get rid of the progestin all together. Progestins are man-made and are chemically different from the progesterone our bodies used to make. This can produce undesirable side effects in some women.

Is Estrogen Making Me CRAZY?

Too much estrogen makes me very anxious and made me feel crazy. Almost like the energizer bunny. I'm on the lowest does of enjuvia and balanceing it with otc progesterone. I have an occ. hot flash not too bad. I wake up early in the morning now. I have lots of guests for Christmas and that I'm sure isn't helping. I do feel more normal with the use of both hormones. I hope you can find some balance. The axiety feels terrible.

Is Estrogen Making Me CRAZY?

Hi Ladies - I DO feel like a crazy nut, and am wondering if its the estrogen, or something else? Started Vivelle Dot right after surgery & felt fine 5 wks. after. On the 6th week, I started feeling depressed and pms-y. Couldn't be PMS, since I had both ovaries removed. Have asked my Drs. if it could be estrogen & they're 'not sure'. Wondering if I should take a lower dose?

Paininthe - can you go off the estrogen?
Hummingbird - You're right! The anxiety does feel terrible.

Is Estrogen Making Me CRAZY?

I thought it might've been my estrogen patch, too, as I switched from Combi-Patch (both progesterone plus estrogen) to just estrogen in Vivelle Dot at about the 5 or 6 week point. I had incredible anxiety afterwards and was even prescribed an anti-depressant, which I discontinued after 4 days. For me, it mainly took time. I am 20 weeks out now and doing much better, even though I haven't changed my dosage or patch at all.

Perhaps you are at the point where you are now running out of your extra stores of estrogen that your body had built up, and your body just needs some extra time to adjust to fully switch over to your new method of receiving estrogen (instead of ovaries)? It does take more time than we think. I found that 3 months out was pretty well a nightmare of emotions running rampant for me, but I am doing much better now (not perfect, but much better).

FWIW,

Brenda

Brenda - Thanks for the encouragement. Can I ask: why did you switch from Combi Patch to Vivelle? Did you have both ovaries removed? I'm feeling anxiety about alot of things - things that I used to handle no problem. I'm pretty much on strike for the holidays - ready for them to be over.
Glad to hear that you're doing btr - that's a relief. You do have a good point about running out of the extra estrogen and needing to adjust to the new method. Thanks for your support!

The new year is coming... and I know we'll all feel better and better in this new year. It is such a shock to our bodies to go through surgical menopause instead of natural menopause. I had heard that before, but didn't think it would be so bad for ME... but it was! I have heard that it is like your body is going 70 miles an hour and it all of a sudden hits a brick wall (ie. getting ovaries and uterus out)!! I don't think we should feel bad at all about needing time and tenderness.

I was originally given CombiPatch because I had extensive endo prior to the surgery, but then my surgeon switched me over to Vivelle Dot earlier than he originally intended because my skin was getting covered in big pink dots for the first patch! And I think there are a few more risks to the CombiPatch because it has progesterone in it, too. And yes, I did have my ovaries out and I experienced hitting that brick wall, big time! But it will get better.... hang in there everyone and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

Is Estrogen Making Me CRAZY?

Thanks for all the info and advise, ladies.

For clarification, I am taking prometrium and estradiol, both in pill form.

Before starting the HRT 3 weeks ago now, I had no hot flashes, no night sweats and no moodiness! Now, since starting it, I have it ALL. I'm so bummed! I felt better before HRT!!

BUT, I'm going to give it some time and give it a chance to level out before I request a change. I'll give it another 3 weeks or so and see how I feel then.

I hope you are all having Happy Holidays and feeling well.

Take Care and keep me posted on how you're feeling,

Christine
