5 Weeks Post Op - Horrible Odor W/ Pink Discharge

Hi, all! I am currently approx 5 weeks post surgery. Removed uterus, kept ovaries - Recovery has been a breeze for me physically speaking. I had surgery on Wed, stayed in hospital overnight and was back working on Friday. I had a bilateral mastectomy 1 year ago and had complications from hell from the surgery, so this was a cake walk compared to that nightmare.

Anyway, around 5 days post op, I began having this NASTY odor coupled with bleeding (heavy period like bleeding). Actually, I've been bleeding the whole time except for a three day break somewhere in the mix. So, I ran to the MD and he hooked me up with the old trusty 'dildo-cam' and noted a 4 cm cyst on my rt ovary. Now that's just swell. Great. I remove the uterus to get rid of these growths and one pops up literally overnight on my ovary (which I'd like to hang on to if at all possible! I have no more organs to spare people!) He said the odor was from healing but gave me an rx for Levaquin for a week to make me happy "just in case there was an infection". Well, this was 4 weeks ago and I am still bleeding (pinkish) and the Levaquin didn't do SQUAT for this nasty, horrible odor. I swear I don't want to leave the house. I smell like road kill. I'm not one of those women who has a natural odor down there. This is new to me and it's really ticking me off. I have thrown away more panties in the past month (and yes I use panty liners - but still - I don't want dirty panties sitting in the laundry for a few days for fear my husband will start hunting for a dead rat behind the dryer!) and the water bill is going to be out of sight. I'm showering x3 per day and my skin is now as dry as a the log in my fire place. Why am I still having this pink discharge and why is it so nasty smelling? I am going to see him again tomorrow - He said it was normal 3 weeks ago but if it's normal then why don't all women post surgery go through this? And if it's 'normal' it wasn't listed on my post op instruction sheet of possible complications or side effects. The sheet I was sent home with essentially said : " band-aid surgery. sex in 2 weeks and rock climbing in three weeks". It said nothing about new growths on remaining organs, bleeding for two months, leg pain, back pain, shoulder pain from gas, smelling like rotting meat, infections, etc. I don't even want to see the MD because it's so embarrassing (and I'm not one to get embarrassed easily). I mean my dogs are following me around the house like I'm 'one of them'. I've been sleeping in the spare bedroom for a month. I can't stand myself and don't want to subject my husband to this mess. I don't even walk by him in passing if I can help it! Any ideas?

Well...getting back to your doctor is first, but it sounds like you may need to move on from him if the answer is just " This is normal" Where the heck is the discharge coming from and what is causing the odor? I am not a doctor, but much of it doesnt make sense. I hope you get your answer quickly. It sound like your quality of life has spiraled down since the surgery. The spare bedroom for mercy sake......Good luck and keep us up on what he says.

5 Weeks Post Op - Horrible Odor W/ Pink Discharge

Hi Ringmaker
I can share that some women do have light bleeding, spotting and discharge the entire six weeks and it's normal. We're all different in how we heal. As the stitches dissolve they can cause an odor, but I'm really not sure why yours would be so strong.

I agree with checking back with your dr. One question I have is, if it is an infection, I think you would be feeling bad too. Usually there is a general feeling of not being well, if not outright pain and misery. Do you have any other symptoms besides the odor that would help your dr figure out what could be causing this?

This sounds miserable. I'm sorry I don't have any really good answers for you. I hope you can get it figured out soon. Please let us know what you find out.
's, Rita

Hi Ringmaker -

I'm glad you are going back to your Dr. This does not sound normal to me. I am one of those still having discharge 6 weeks later. I saw my Dr and he said the discharge is because I'm not healed up yet. I had some complications that set me back. BUT - he said as long as the discharge had no odor it was fine. IF it starts having odor or I start feeling bad again etc he wanted me to have a VERY low threshold about calling him. I did have a post op infection as one of my complications. I will say to the posters point above that when I had my infection I felt VERY unwell.

Good Luck - I hope they clear this up soon for you so you can have your life back!!!!
