Urinary Incontinence

I just had my catheter removed this morning after having it in for 2 weeks (perforated bladder during surgery). I'm able to urinate on the toilet fine, but I've noticed stress incontinence (sneeze, cough, raise voice), as well as just general leakage throughout the day. I'm hoping it's just a matter of time since my bladder still has to recover from the injury. I've been doing Kegel exercises all day and will continue to do so. Does anyone have any experience with this? I'd hate to think I might need another surgery.

Urinary Incontinence

Hi there,

I had my surgery on a Monday, catheter removed on Tuesday at 2:00 am. I had problems urinating until Sunday. I felt like I had to go but couldn't. I leaked urine. I coughed and it came out. I had spasms. The doc said it was all related to the trauma of the surgery on the bladder and with the catheter.

I would give it some time. I know it is scary, I felt the same way! :-)

I would think that, having had the catheter for 2 weeks, it might take your bladder a while to work quite right - especially given that it had trauma during the surgery.

Thanks for the reassurance from both of you. I'll just practice my patience and give it more time. In the mean time - - - daily kegels.

Aren't you getting sick of hearing the phrase - "it takes time"? I know I am!

Kegals!!! That is a great idea. We probably all need to be doing these, just to help get everything back to normal.

Kirpiggy,

I had the cath for about a week +. I also leaked urine when it was first removed. I am six weeks out this week and it's probably been like 2 weeks where I haven't leaked at all.

Good Luck!!! Aren't you glad to be done with that thing!! I know I was. BTW - my bladder felt awful even after that was out when I urinated. It is 80% better now. Just little twinges now and then.

Tam, yes, I'm tired of hearing that time is the answer. I'm very impatient!

Starbgirl, yes, I'm so glad to have it out. It does twinge a bit right toward the end when I'm close to emptying my bladder. It's nice to know that yours has cleared up. It gives me hope. Thanks for posting.

I'll be 8 weeks out tomorrow and only started having leakage problems at the beginning of 7 weeks. I also wondered, why now?
