hair loss after 1+ yrs on HRT
I just joined today and I would appreciate some advice. I lost both ovaries in 8/2005 and since then my hair has been falling out. Now I've got about 1/2 of it left and it's still falling out. I didn't start HRT until 6 months after the surgery. I was on oral estrogen for 4 months, then on Climara 1mg patches for a few months (they didn't stick) and now I've been on Vivelle 1mg patches for almost a year. I'm also on Prometrium 14 days a month and testosterone (gel) every other day. I've been reading that some of you have experienced hair loss on Vivelle and I'm so scared that I'll go bald. Losing the ovaries and dealing with all the side effects has been bad enought but I'm hoping that I can save my hair . Please, any suggestions, advice, etc. is truly appreciated.

Porgesterone and Testosterone are both Male dominated hormones that would affect hair loss. Perhaps they are contributing. What are your blood levels of Testosterone? Why was it added?

hair loss after 1+ yrs on HRT
For what it's wprth, everytime I have used vivelle I have shed hair. I would have long strands of hair coming out in my fingers when I shampooed. I had forgotten about vivelle doing this to my hair when I tried it again over the summer. I have been back on femring .1mg and hair seems to be staying on head.

I struggle with hair thinning when my testosterone is too high. My hair has improved with the vivelle dot alone. If you haven't done so, you might want to get your testosterone levels checked.
My Dr has explained to me that progesterone (Prometrium) is a precurser hormone that has potential to become testosterone. I don't use any Progesterone, but that is because my body's normal tendency is to make too much testosterone. We can't control what the progesterone will do once it is in our bodies. I do better without it.

Thanks for all of your responses. My MD added testosterone to my mix because it was low. I have had it checked since and it is in the normal range. I forgot to mention that in addition to the Vivelle dot I'm also on the lowest dose of Enjuvia. Could this addition be the culprit? I've never had thick hair but I certainly don't want to lose what I do have left. Do you guys think its possible to go bald after having both ovaries removed even with HRT?
On a brighter note, I want to wish you all HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!

hair loss after 1+ yrs on HRT
Lachica - I started on .1 mg V-Dot patch 8 weeks post-op and then my hair started noticeably shedding about 2 months after that (didn't know it was shedding until the hair loss was evident as it was going down the drain). It continued shedding huge amounts for about 2 months. I also lost about 1/2 my hair and it wasn't thick to begin with. It then slowed but I still had periods of excessive shedding. I wasn't taking any testosterone. I switched to hormone pellets about 13 months after I started on the V-Dot patch and the shedding abated about 2 months after starting on estrogen and testosterone pellets (I've been on them for 6 months now). Once your hairs go into the resting (telogen) phase, it takes 2-3 months for the shedding to occur so you won't see an immediate hair response to hormone changes which makes it a little more difficult to associate the two and take corrective action (changing HRT).
Testosterone can cause hair loss but I've read that's due to conversion to DHT which doesn't happen in everyone. I think in most cases of hysterectomized women and women that have hair loss during perimenopause or menopause, the hair loss is due to hormonal imbalance and fluctuations. I don't think I was "balanced" on V-Dot as I had horrible depression with some anxiety which have improved greatly on the pellets. I also had some occasional mild hot flashes on the patch and they're very infrequent on the pellets. Of course, the hair loss contributed to the depression and anxiety! But I think I needed testosterone also as I've also read that low testosterone can contribute to hair loss just as can too much testosterone. I've read that in some women, the hair follicles are very sensitive to hormonal fluctuations. Unfortunately, you sound like one of them as am I and it sucks along with the many other adverse effects of this surgery!
I hope you can get your hair loss under control and it starts growing back as the hair loss for me has been the most devastating. Keep us posted.

DB2567--Thanks so much for your reply to my hair concern. I saw my MD last week and she did blood tests for all sorts of things (hormones, thyroid, iron, etc.) so hopefully there will be some answers soon. However, I have stopped shedding so much and my hair appears to be regrowing and I'm hopeful that it will continue to do so as the hair loss on top of everything else has, as for you, been devastating. I'm just glad that I have women like yourself that I can chat with that understand what I'm going through.
