bowel movement - anytime soon?

well they cleaned me out before surgery and now the only movement i had was a bit of mucus third day out. sorry gross. but hey we're family right.
i can feel it moving around in there but nothing comes out. eating whole grains, fruit and drinking my coffee. but still nothing. i know im worried its going to hurt, cause the movement sometimes does.
anyone else have these problems?
i also have IBS so dont really want to resort to the softeners.

bowel movement - anytime soon?

Hi Fit&Ready,
Like yourself, I had did the major bowel prep prior to surgery, so there was nothing there. I did not move my bowels until the following Tues (8 days after my surgery) & that was after 3 days of Milk of Magnesia ....yuck!!!!! I recall calling the dr's office on day 4 postop as I was really concerned .... but they were not & told me to try MOM in a couple of days. In the meantime, I did take (& continue to take) a stool softener every day. Good Luck & best wishes for a healthy recovery!

If you don't want to use stool softeners you might try using something like metamucil. I would also increase your water intake and maybe cut out the coffee. Coffee can dehydrate you and prevent your stools from forming properly. Since they cleaned you out before surgery it may take a few days before your intestines have enough food to cause a bm so be patient. What you have been feeling may also be the gas they pump you full of during surgery.

Miralax worked wonders for me. No gas cramping or anything. I have suffered in the past from IBD so I am cautious also. Maybe ask your doc about this.

remember the more pain meds you take the more it constipated you will become ... Also lay off the caffine, try to eat dried aprocots they work really well. although I did not do a bowel prep for this surgery I did do one 3 weeks before for a colonoscopy. and the doc said to eat dried aprocots and boy was he right! by the next day I had good healthy BM. also drink LOTS of water and walk as much as possible... it really helps

bowel movement - anytime soon?

It was almost ten days before I went and boy was I worried! Took a stool softener twice a day for three days, drank a ton of water and lots of juices. Tried to get out of bed when my husband did in the morning and made sure I ate some kind of breakfast like oatmeal or All Bran, yogurt or bananas. Finally had the mucousy kind....then eased into it. I can't say it really hurt...was more uncomfortable in my abdomen as things started to move along. I yelped a little since I was home alone. Have had some abdominal tenderness since I woke my intestines up...but nothing to serious. Always something to worry about.
