How long should you stay in hospital?

Dear sisters

I am a 57 year old who lives in England. I had my surgery (total hysterectomy) because of cancer of the uterus on the 10th in a National Health Service hospital - no cost to me. I didn't leave hospital until 16th when I felt ready to go home. I am amazed to read that some of you returned home on the same day - even with catheters!

I feel very lucky to have had the 6 days in hospital.

Best wishes to you all for the New Year.

How long should you stay in hospital?

I was approved for a 2 day stay when I had my tah/bso. I ended up staying for 4 days after having a reaction to morphine. I was grateful to be able to stay too.

I think it's all really individual. I was in for one night, but I had LSH which I've heard is the easiest type of hysterectomy to have. I'm three weeks post op tomorrow and ready to go back to work as soon as an infection in one incision clears up.

How long should you stay in hospital?

I had a TVH with bladder sling, and was approved for 1 night stay in the castle. I ended up staying an extra night as I kept throwing up and couldn't eat, they needed to make sure I could keep food down before sending me home. I was ready by the time I got to go home.

I think, too, that here in the US it's very heavily influenced by insurance standards and what insurance companies are willing to pay. I've been reading that, for TAH, the stay is often 2 days. Now, if there's a medical reason for the doctor to extend the stay, the insurance accommodates, but I really think hospital stay tends to fall into industry standards.

Of course, my mom and my boss remember the day when hospitals here used to keep you for a full week!

How long should you stay in hospital?

I stayed for 3days and then on Friday when I was home along I wished I had stayed an extra day! Thank goodness a neighbor called to see how I was doing and brought me lunch and a bunch of magazines!

How long should you stay in hospital?

Hello,

I had a Supercervical Abdominal Hysterectomy to treat two large fibroids (sized at 6 month and 5 month fetus). My vertical incision is approximately 9 inches long.

My insurance approved for 2 days, my doctor recommended 3 days. I was actually in the hospital for 5 days - low blood count, extreme gas and constipation. The gas was so bad and my abdomen was so detended that an EKG, chest x-ray, and abdominal x-ray was performed to ensure all was in order. Staff insisted upon a bowel movement prior to me leaving the hospital, and thank God they did. I needed the extra time in the hospital.

I consider myself to have a high tolerance for pain, but I've never experienced anything like abdominal surgery. My abdomen/incision feels good, no bleeding, but plenty of soreness, aches, catches and pain when I overdo it. My mood and attitude is better than ever, however, I'm physically slower than I expected, so I'm patiently recovering and listening to my body. I'm amazed at what some of you women have been able to accomplish so soon after your surgery, and I applaud you and also know I will get there eventually.

How long should you stay in hospital?

I also had an SAH - my Dr told me it could be just an overnight stay. After the 1st night she asked if I wanted to stay a 2nd night, which I definitely did. Was suppose to be discharged next day but developed fever and had to stay a 3rd night. All in all, am very glad it worked out that way - I felt good enough when leaving the hospital that I wasn't afraid to go home and be worried about how to get out of bed without causing pain, if something horrible was going to go wrong, etc.

30-something years ago I had an ovarian cyst removed thru an abdominal incision (the dark ages of medicine) and was in the hospital 5 days. It certainly seems like insurance companies dictate how medicine is practiced in the U.S. these days.

How long should you stay in hospital?

I had a TAH/BSO but I have another health condition that potentially could have complicated things. My doctor told me it would be 7 or 8 days minimum, 1-2 in ICU. I had surgery on Friday, was out of ICU by Saturday evening, and went home Tuesday afternoon - 4.5 days. I did fine. I was ready to go home Monday but the doctor had to be convinced, thank goodness for nurses that know how to steer the doctors into a corner when it's necessary. She was a champion nurse
