Opposite of Constipation?

Hi Ladies,
I'm a newbie to the site and am thrilled there is a forum to help with all the questions and concerns I have. I was feeling all alone with no where to turn. I hate to call the doctor with nagging questions so this is really cool!

I had my adominal hyster. on Friday the 21st. It's been a rough go of it with lots of nausea each day and burning pain in my incision. I have a question for you? I have a BM approximately 8-10 times a day. That's been happening since I came home from the hospital on the 23rd! I keep reading that so many of you are troubled with constipation. I wonder why I'm the opposite? Maybe too much fiber in my diet? I am wondering if this is going to be the way it's going to be for me from now on. Scary thought!!!

Also, anyone know what to do for the bad burning of the incision? How long does it take for that to taper off? I can tell when I am doing too much because it hurts like a son-of-a-gun, but anyone know of anything to help that heal faster or lessen the pain?

Thanks a bunch!

Just REST a lot. I knew it was time to stop doing what I was doing (whether it involved sitting or standing) any time I started to feel that burn. Sitting really doesn't promote healing as much as lying down......or at least that's been my experience.

Opposite of constipation?

Are the BM's runny? I ask because I was told that the antibiotics can cause another form of infection in the intestine that can lead to diarrhea. I had diarrhea after my cuff repair and had to do a stool sample.(Not Fun!) but it was fine. If I were you I would put in a call to the nurse and find out what your doctor thinks. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Also, another thought. Maybe it is a result of your pain meds. Usually they cause constipation, but everyone is different. Once I got going again, day 3 after surgery, I had the almost the same problem - only 3-4 times per day.
Good luck and call your DR.

Opposite of constipation?

janelle9876, Leaves and supportneeded....

Thanks for your reply and advice!

The BM's aren't running but are pretty normal. The only pain meds I've had is 800 mg ibuprofen (I don't do well with any pain medications!) I guess I'd much rather have what I have in comparison to everyone's constipation though! A friend who's been through this thought that maybe it's because I'm NOT on pain meds. They apparently are constipating? I'm going to mellow out on the oatmeal and wheat bread and see what happens. I've also been alternating with Kashi Go Lean Crunch in my yogurt. I'll take a break from the fiber and see what happens! I just remember the drumming in my ear of the doctors harping at me to make sure to eat a high fiber diet the minute I get home! I also thought I would make it a fresh new start to eat healthy and start on losing that 20 pounds that I was planning to tackle after the holidays!

Either way...I may do what you all suggested and see what the nurse's line says. I'll ask about the insomnia too. Man, there are a lot of things that go along with this surgery that I had NO idea about! I'm almost glad I didn't know about them sooner. I would have freaked myself out about it.

Thanks guys (I mean gals) for the help!!

Opposite of constipation?

It can take awhile for the bowels to settle back into a normal routine, and often the pain meds complicate that. However, 8-10 x / day sounds like a lot ... give the doc a call and just check with them. It can't hurt to see what they think.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

That Kashi Go Lean Fiber cereal will have you going LOTS... cut down on the fiber.. go with more fruits and vegetables.. that will have you going..but not as much as 8-10 times a day. Me, I've got the same problem, only its not from eating fiber, it's a gastro problem I'm seeing a specialist for. It's not fun at all! If you lay off some of the fiber, and try eating some more cheez in your diet, add bananas too.. it might slow you down a bit. Things that take longer to digest, like meats also may help. if you're not a vegetarian or vegan.

Opposite of constipation?

Hi!
Okay...I eased off the fiber, etc and have now managed to keep the BMs to 2 a day. Much better huh?? I can live with that. One thing is...I am totally cleaned out!! Not only did I have a total TAH I also got a complete colon cleanse! I'm think I solved the insomnia last night when my DH went out and bought me some Tylenol PM. I took 2 and I slept like a baby until 8:45am! I'm usually up at 5 am each day but this felt wonderful! Definitely try that if you really are struggling with not sleeping. I won't take it everynight, but I might for a few or so.

Does anyone know about putting Mederma or some other incision cream on our owie? When should we start doing that or shouldn't we?

Thanks for the advice. You all saved me a co-pay! :-)
