I know you're not supposed to take asprin or advil/motrin, but what about darvocet? I have severe (unrelated) pain in my back today but am scared to take anything because I have surgery in a week. Darvocet has Acetaminophen.

Can I take Darvocet 8 days BEFORE surgery (unrelated pain)

Hi,
I was not told not too take anything except for 3 days prior to surgery, I have had to take dayquil but when I read you post that frightened me so I went and read the orders again and it said no aspirin or acetaminophen 3 days prior to surgery. I am having TAH/BSO and will not take anything after today just to be sure. The day I had my cold cone surgery I guess I had gotten myself all worked up and ended up with the worst headache and they gave me something there for the pain prior to surgery. Call the doctor they will tell you, good luck.

Hi!
Call and ask your doctor. I took tylenol 3 even 5 hours prior to surgery as I have very bad back pain and the doctor gave her approval. The anesthesiologist also gave his approval. Call the office and talk with the nurse and you may want to talk with the anesthesiologist to see when you need to quit taking the medicine.
Good luck!

Definitely give your doctor's office a call. Every doc and every case is different, and it's always better to be safe than sorry. Good luck!

The (((sisters))) are right -- it's worth a call to the doctor. Maybe he/she has an alternative treatment they want you to try. Good luck to you!

If you can't reach your doctor, you might also try calling the surgery department at your hospital - maybe even the anesthesiology department. I would definitely recommend getting a professional opinion for this, though.

It's worth a call. I asked the anesthesiologist at my presurgical visit a few days before about taking tylenol or darvocet for pain prior to surgery and they told me it was ok to take with just a sip of water. I had tylenol at 6 am before my surgery that ended up being at 3 pm.
