No bowel movements 4 days post op

I do not have IBS, so I cannot speak about that.

What I can say is that I had LSH on a Monday and didn't poop unitl Friday...and even then..it was slow. I felt the urge and went to sit. I took my time, as my Dr recommended. I then remembered what my OB/gyn told me 20 years earlier....."think down and out, down and out." In other words, don't strain.

On Tuesday through Friday I drank a lot of water (which is normal for me) and ate dried prunes, which I had forgotten that I like!

It took 5 days before I had a BM and that one was easy, it was the few after that that were stubborn.

All the advice given above is good, I've switched from taking stool softeners to having a handful of nuts a couple of times a day, and a glass of juice with breakfast. I love nuts and they really do help. I didn't have them for a couple of days and I clogged right up again.

Good luck!

I have IBS too and I highly recommend Dulcolax suppositories over the other laxatives. They just work better for me and not so much cramping and stomach upset. You can buy them at Target or anywhere like that.

It took me five days, too, and I was in TERRIBLE pain that day (it was Christmas Eve no less...ugh). When things finally started moving (I'd been on stool softeners the whole time), I felt a hundred times better. I've had a little trouble since, but I just stay on the Colace and keep my patience. It'll happen.

I am 3 weeks postop, and I'm still on stool softeners ecause I'm pretty petrified of bm's! The"travel" can be so painful. I was 5 or 6 days postop before things returned to normal, and that was with 3 colace/day in hospital for 3 days. I've only recently backed of to 2/day. Hang in there!

I'm almost 10 weeks post-op. I've been eating bran flakes since surgery. I can understand completely the fear of the "travel." If I ever have surgery again, I will definitely address this issue ahead of time.

It took me 5 days before I had the first BM, and that was after taking two colace, twice a day, every day since I woke up!

Hang in there- continue the stool softeners (it will help), relax and drink lots of water!!! (a little apple or prune juice might help too)

Good Luck!

No bowel movements 4 days post op

I had a TAH and ovary and tube removal including cervix on 12/26. I did not have a bowel movement until 1/1. I tried stool softeners and other things but no help. What finally helped was lots of prune juice. It took a lot of attempts because of pain and muscle weakness but now I am ok. Hang in there, I was scared too but once it gets moving again I was ok. Hope it helps you.

I too went thru what you are going thru. I drank plenty of water, took Colace, stool softners, Gas X, and drank prune juice and still...nothing. My cousin who is a nurse said to drink WARM prune juice and within the hour- bingo- bango!!! What a relief!!! Good luck, it does the trick!!!

me too!

I had my bm at four days postop - I spent a lot of time from day one drinking a lot, taking my colace religiously twice per day, which you can get OTC at any store- My doc also gave me a bowel recipe of mixing 1 cup prune juice with 1 cup of unprocessed wheat bran (from the grocery store) and I would eat two tablespoons once or twice per day for extra fiber, and made sure to drink lots of water. Also, peppermint tea helped me greatly when I felt like I needed to go and it wasn't going to come out. I drank half a cup of hot peppermint tea, and things really got going. It was a life saver. I also drank some prune juice, and made sure I ate fibrous foods as much as possible. One of my biggest problems prior to surgery was years of constipation from the rectocele I had, so I was very, very worried that I wouldn't be able to go after surgery.

Hopefully some of this can help you- Most of all, try to relax and not panic. You'll be able to get it going.
