BM after Surgery?

I had the surgery on Monday and the first BM today--- on Thursday. It was not fun because I had extensive rectum repairs but it was not horrible either. I will continue to use the stool softeners and hope that it will be easier the next time.

BM after Surgery?

For me it took a week. I was taking percocet regularly and unfortunately it is very constipating. I did take the stool softeners and drink water and so forth, but I won't lie-- it was painful.

In my case I think the problem was exacerbated by not doing a bowel prep (my doctor did not want me to) and getting very dehydrated after surgery. After I cut back on the Percocet, things improved dramatically.

Good luck!

(sorry, could not resist this rather odd smilie)

BM after Surgery?

Please, Please, do not stress over no BM as yet. I finally had BM at 7 days post op. I was so worried and stressed, needlessly. I researched afterwards and found that your colon is the last organ to "wake up" from surgery. Yes, they gave me suppository at 3 days post-op. Why? I told them I hadn't eaten hardly anything for 4 days. Nothing is in there!!
I only took a stool softener one time. It was a little painful, first BM, but what a relief!!!! not to worry, yet, now if you haven't gone and ARE eating by 8-10 days, then I would call Doc.
