Almost 1 week and no BM help I'm scared

Hi all! I had my hysterectomy almost a week ago with few complications and a lot of stitches down there. Was sent home with a stool softener which I took but didn't really eat anything worthy until about Friday afternoon. It is now Tuesday night. After lots of fiber, a fiber supplement and about 4tbsp of M.O.M. I have lots of pressure, some gas but no bm. Lots of tears and frustration. Know I can't strain at all, but am afraid to put anything else in me. Went from a strong recovering girl to a quivering, blubbering jelly fish.

Didn't mention if you were on any prescription pain meds. They can add to the problem. Try to get off them and on just Motrin or Advil as soon as you feel comfortable. Also if you did a bowel clean out before surgery, you have to remember there isn't much in your system yet. My first BM was 4 days after and only small amount. Try a dried prune and some canned peaches...worked like a charm for me. Even after the first BM and several others, gas stayed with me for a couple of days.

Call your Doc if you are still having trouble. They really don't want you to strain or be in pain.

Best of luck...hang in there!

Almost 1 week and no BM help I'm scared

I know how you feel. It took me forever to feel better. I called my doctor's office and I had to take two colaces everyday. Then they said if that didn't work take Phillips Milk of Magnesium Caplets with a lot of water. They also told me to avoid cheese and chocolate as that is very constipating. On this board, they recommended Miralax. If any of these suggestions can't help you then I would definitely call your doctor's office. It's no good feeling so much pressure and trying to recover.

My problem is that I did strain...UGH!! Then I would clear up and then I would have it the same problem again. Once you get cleared up you may have to take Colace for quite a while until you are very regular.

I know what you are going through ((((((hugs))))). Just drink A LOT of water and do a little walking that might do the trick. Best of luck to you.

Almost 1 week and no BM help I'm scared

Hi sunnyca,

I didn't "go" until 5 days later. Drink lots of water, especially with all the fibre & stool softeners. Try to relax. I normally hate word search puzzle books, but kept one in the bathroom...it helped me relax & not focus so much on going. I did five whole pages before I had any action!!! I also put a pkg. of toilet paper rolls under my feet to take the stain off my stomach. Once you pass this hurdle (pun lol!!) you will feel so much better.

Your nearly there. PS I still have the insomnia..hope you get some sleep soon too.

I used miralax (laxative) AND Colace (stool softener) plus I drank warm prune juice mixed with apple juice. All that did the trick for me. How long ago did you do the m.o.m.? That stuff should kick in soon.

Miralax is really great.

Call your Dr if you are really worried but it seems that I've read about a lot of people taking a long time to have a bm.

Also- sip on hot broth. This might sound really strange but if you have a heating pad - try sitting on it with it on Med. Sometimes it helps to get things moving.

Thanks so much, ladies! I only took one dose of pain meds today, and haven't felt the need for more. This has made me really emotional, but I take comfort in your comments!

I took two colaces daily too, combined with lots of water and applesauce and things were moving quickly. I know that when I was on the pain meds I didn't have an appetite or was queasy so I ate crackers. Well, that stops you up!! Praying that all works out for you soon!

pain meds can be very constipating so be careful how many you are taking. try to alternate motrin and the pain meds. you can also take more milk of magnesia than that. thats the only thing that worked for me. stool softners and eating the right foods, drinking lots..did nothing. i had to double up on the mom and once i went, everything started working again regularly. good luck!

Well, I finally went. What a relief! The gas is back, but a welcome change from the bloat. Couldn't believe that it was so hard to pass after all of the fiber and stuff I've had. Glad that is done! Had conjured up a lot of bad thoughts about things that had gone wrong internally. Was glad there was no bleeding, too. Appreciate the thoughts and prayers. It has truly been a comfort to me.

No BM

sunnyca, good for you. Did you ever think that after all the problems that led up to a hysterectomy, 'going poo' would become such a focus? lol !! Keep drinking lots of water & try to eat balanced but small meals, staying away from the gassy veggies like cauliflower, cabbage, etc.

Hugs to you.
