What is the vaginal cuff supposed to look like?

If you have an TAH are the stiches on the interior of the cuff (abdomen side) vs a TVH where they would be extereior (vaginal side)??

What is the vaginal cuff supposed to look like?

I saw a video of a LSH with the divinci method and it was stitched through the holes in the abdomen sutured with "thread" through the top of the open vaginal canal like you would mend the top of a sock.I would think with a TAH they would be on the top, the abdomen side, not the vagina side. You asked a really good question!! You would think if it is vaginal only, without laproscopic support, it would be stitched on the inside... - Suzyq

What is the vaginal cuff supposed to look like?

To answer the question, someone here stated that she had used a mirror to see inside. It's been some time since that post. I just got the courage to look about a week ago (I'm not normally one to do that sort of thing ), and I only did it because there is an area that has hurt for several weeks and I wanted to see if there was anything there. There is something there that looks odd to me, but I wanted to see a picture or know what a healed one looked like so I would know if it was supposed to look like that.

Just to clarify... those of us who have TVH's can also have our ligaments reattached/shortened holding up the cuff, without laparoscopy; it's just done from inside before the cuff is sewn shut.

What is the vaginal cuff supposed to look like?

I called my friend who is an operating room nurse and has seen numerous hysterectomies. She laughed hysterically as I was panicking about where my vaginal cuff was, if I was supposed to see it or feel it, if my partner would see/feel it during sex, etc. She explained to me that I had an abdominal hysterectomy and at the end of the surgery they sew up the end of the vaginal canal (which normally leads into the cervix and then into the uterus) bc there's nothing for it to lead into... It looks like the end of a tube suck with the stitches and the healing takes place in the 6 weeks (one major reason you wait 6 weeks before sex)... Of course this was explained to me after her laughing fit at my panicked questions!

What is the vaginal cuff supposed to look like?

hmmm........my vag. cuff would be lucky to be 2" inside? now, i'm wondering if that could be why i'm developing problems with sex. at first, it seemed ok, but, the cuff is more tender now, months later? hmmm......gee. ps my cuff feels lumpy/bumpy and very uneven. there is actuallly one bulgey lump, kinda feels like an epiglottis? eeeuuww.......not happy ! !

What is the vaginal cuff supposed to look like?

This post has been on my mind all week. So... here's what I've been thinking about and maybe no one knows the answer. So if you have a TVH and like the picture you are sewn up from inside the vagina the "seam" on the tube sock - lol - would be felt from inside the vagina. But if you have a TAH and are sewn up on the inside then the "seam" on the tube sock would be interior and not felt from inside the vagina????? Is that true??

The only reason I've been wondering is that maybe it is more comfortable sexual relations wise if the seam isn't "in" the vagina?? I have no experience as I am currently single and unable to test out the equiptment. Wah!! I just hope it doesn't shrivel up and die. sniff, sniff...

The seam would be on both sides, the way the cuff is made, no matter which side it's stitched from. The top of the vagina is pulled together and sort of 'folded' a bit and then stitched all the way through the layers of tissue. The needle used is called a "CT-1", which is semicircular in shape - think upholstery needle for a visual.

The only times I've heard women here complain that their partners said they could feel the cuff have been when they still had bits of undissolved stitches poking out of it. Some bodies' chemistries dissolve the stitches faster than others.

If you're not currently 'testing the equipment', you may want to talk with your DR about using some vaginal estrogen cream to make sure it stays nice and healthy and elastic so you're ready when the time comes.

What is the vaginal cuff supposed to look like?

Just want to mention that since my operation, every time I open my sock drawer to pull a pair, I've been angry at the only-a-few pairs of tube socks I have. I've been very attracted to ankle sox and patterned kneesocks.

Oh, our cuffs! Thanks for everything you've all shared so far!

What is the vaginal cuff supposed to look like?

I'm REALLY glad this topic was brought up because I've seen the word "cuff" mentioned in several places on this forum and had no idea what it was! I was going to ask my dr or nurse next time I went in.

It also helps to explain why I still feel tenderness down there....it's still VERY tender to the touch when I wipe after going to the bathroom. This certainly helps me understand what's going on!

One more reason I'm thankful for this website!
