Please seek a second opinion and ask for a surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic technique. I had giant fibroids and they were able to do the surgery through three tiny incisions. Not all docs are able to perform this surgery technique, thus you will get the vag/abd options.

Not all hospitals are equipped for this surgery either. So, take your time to at least explore these new up and coming procedures that literally cuts healing time in half or more.

Once you've explored this, you and your doctors can decide which is best for you.

Good luck, keep coming back to us. We're here for you!

Peace and Love,
Brinks

Sometimes the fibroids are so heavily entrenched that TAH is the option; there are plenty of reports over on the Post-Op boards where the planned op was laparoscopic but the surgeon switched to TAH because of the circumstances.

Very true, Soprano, exactly why she needs to explore all her options and then make an informed decision.

I don't have endo, so my doc felt very confident that I would do fine with a LSH, but like you said, some situations require an abdominal incision.

Thanks for clarifying!

hi

I had a LSH on January 14 because I have 2 large fibroids. Mydoctor said my uterice was about 35 percent larger than it should have been and my fibroids took up all uterine spce and my surgery was done laproscopicly. Please try to find a doctor who preforms laproscopic surgery...it took me over a year to find one. It is a world of difference than abdominal surgery. My mom had hers done abdomanally and she really suffered. Denise.

I have multiple fibroids and a 18 week size uterus.
My first MD opinion was TAH with vertical incision only.
My second MD (laproscopically trained MD) offered TAH.
My third MD laproscopically trained MD offered only TAH.
I have never asked for a second MD's opinion on any subject, and certainly never a third. I knew enough from you ladies to ask for more. They all said no, and I know why they all said no. You also need to know why your fibroid is too big for TLH..

large fibroids, large uterus

It's been 8 weeks since surgery, TAH and BSO. I had an enlarged uterus and fibroids weighing 11 pounds. My incision starts 4 inches above my belly button on down. I'm feeling great and will be going back to work, part time, in 2 weeks. I over did it a couple of times and my body sure let me know. It's so true when everyone tells you to baby yourself. I want everyone here to know how much I appreciate this website. I feel human again!!! Thank you all!!

Hi Hosehag,

I agree. Get a 2nd opinion if you can. My 1st Dr. wanted to do a TAH due to the size of my fibroids. She said I was *not* a candidate for a less invasive hyst.

I decided to get a 2nd opinion and I was prepared to have a TAH if a 2nd Dr. agreed.

Instead...my 2nd Dr. suggested a LSH, a less invasive hyst after I did (3) months of lupron shots to shrink my large fibroids for surgery. I did lupron and I had my LSH. It is still one of the best things I ever did for my gyneo health.

A footnote...I found out ~after~ my hyst that my 1st Dr. could *not* do laparoscopic hysts. I agree with the other ladies...that the laparoscopic surgery type takes more training. So do take your time and research Drs as much as you can.

Sending best wishes~

Mary
