weight gain -- i could just scream!
hi, I gained another pound today. this is so frustrating. My hyst was Oct 31 and throughout my initial 6 week recovery, I maintained my weight without gaining. Now, I'm almost 12 weeks post op and I've gained 5 pounds. what gives?
I'm walking and strength training and continuuing with food intake, like before. I just don't understand. Just a little background. I've lost 70 lbs, then gained some. I'm not sure, but I wonder how much was related to my uterine cancer diagnosis. I just don't understand my recent gain.
I would have totally not been surprised about gaining during my initial recovery, but not now. Gee, I've been working out so hard this past week. Maybe I should go back and walk, like I did during my 6 week recovery time. I walked alot, just much less intensity than now and wasn't using any weights.
any idea or thoughts??? With all of this frustration, I must add that I'm so thankful to be cancer-free.
thanks.

weight gain -- i could just scream!
This is a frustration I share. I have been doing 2-hour workouts on the ARC trainer and treadmill 3 xs a week since the beginning of the year and have lost no weight at all. None. In fact, I gained 4 pounds to get to the present weight I'm maintaining. I know some of it's muscle, but c'mon! How much do I have to do? I lost 45 pounds prior to learning I had fibroids, most of which I have gained back. I'm not letting myself be discouraged, because these workouts are for more than losing weight, but it's hard not to give up and wonder, "Why bother?" At least I enjoy the ARC trainer and can read while I do it. My only other consolation is that my old jeans are a smidgen easier to get into now. It's something!

celtic tigeress, you are so right! Some muscle, yeah, but not so much. You are right in that working out is more than losing weight, but it's so discouraging. Even though I've gained, I can wear clothes that I wore before surgery. Not letting yourself give up is a great goal and one that I will try to adopt. It would be so easy to just throw all of this away and go back to my large sizes. I will not give up!! That's it!!
Perhaps we are just adjusting our bods which is surely true. I use Leslie Sansone walk aerobic programs. I walk 2-4 miles per day, along with strength training. I'm using 3 lb weights and trying to get back up to 5 lb or so.
Maintaining is always good. Today, that was my hope when I weighed, but alas, I worked harder last week and gained.
My food intake is the same, I think. I'll be watching that even more carefully. thanks.

Glad to help. I just got back from 2 hours on the treadmill at the Y. Maybe foregoing the ARC every now and then and just doing the treadmill will stimulate my weight loss.

Ladies,
As a long-time member of Weight Watchers I can tell you this: if you are not eating enough and drinking enough water, your body will hold onto the weight.
When I work out a lot, I make sure I eat a few more calories each day that I work out - otherwise, your body goes into starvation mode, and "hang on" to the pounds. I have seen this first hand on the scale at my weekly weigh ins. Same with not drinking enough water ------- bodies are amazing machines........
I also found it helpful to measure while I was working out a lot. I didn't always see it on the scale, but I ALWAYS saw it on the tape measure.........I wouldn't always lose pounds when I lost inches.
Hang in there ladies!!

weight gain -- i could just scream!
Hi Lovetowalk
I too had my surgery on Oct 31. Just found this sight two days ago. I too have been frustrated by how I am feeling, and what seems like a lack of progress. I am doing an interval program on the stationary bike, walking and trying hard to behave myself with eating. Don't quite understand how I haven't lost and have gained a few. I am soooo tired. Thinking I may call the internist and get my thyroid checked. I had some borderline numbers doing an emergency admission several weeks before my surgery.
I too had the cancer scare. Had elevated bloodwork and a mass of CT that suggested ovarian cancer. I am trying to remember to be thankful that I am 'just' recovering from surgery and not needing chemo or radiation. I am struggling with my 'surgically induced' menopause!. I will think of you when I am riding in the am.

ooo - biking - during my initial recovery, I said that I'd never ride a bike again. I had a feeling like I'd been riding a bike for days. That feeling finally went away. I might consider a recumbent bike.
I was already in menopause, so I think that has helped.
Intervals are good workouts. Thanks.

Hi again
My interval program is on a recumbent bike...in the basement as soon as the kids go off to school. I watch GMA and pedal away.
thanks for your reply

I thought I was the only one!! LOL
Boy, I am not alone in my gaining of the weight!!! I have gained 15 pounds since my hyster on Aug 21, 07!!! 2 weeks ago, I finally could not fit into ANY of my jeans so we hired a personal trainer at the YMCA!!! Naturally, he wanted me to be this buff chick, but I had to tell him of my weight restrictions and he modified my workout. I have lost 2 pounds but is sure doesn't look like it at all..............Kieep in mind I have been keeping track of my calorie intake and it is less than 2,000 per day, mostly at about 1200- 1500. So I don't get it. We hired him for 6 weeks in hope I get in shape before I have to have the dreaded surgery again since it didn't work and things are actually worse with the rectocele and now a possible entrocele. Yes my doc(new) has insisted that if she does surgery on me, I must have the defogram. I am so excited I could just jump for joy. NOT............
I guess all we can do is the best we can to keep ourselves healthy as possible.
Have a good day all.....
Tammy

I see I am not alone. I am 7 weeks post op and have gained 5 pounds. This is 5% of my body weight! Most of my pants don't fit. I've been busy back at work for 2 weeks but haven't done a lot of exercise yet. Are any of you on HRT? I'm wondering if this has something to do with it.
