Did I do too much too soon, dr. gave no restrictions after TAH

I had my TAH on 1/7, which was a Monday, went home that thursday the 10th, and by Monday the 14th was walking up and down the stairs and cooking dinner, I felt great when taking my meds, but the real reason why I did it was because my doctor never game me any restrictions upon discharge. Both my dad and husband were there with me during my surgery and he told both of them I could walk up and down stairs and do everything except lift or drive because I was on painkillers. There was a lifting restriction for 1 month, but besides that nothing. I have read so many things on this board about not being able to walk up and down stairs, but my doctor said that was fine. I live in a townhouse so in order to get the kitchen or living room, I have to walk downstairs. So my family, listening to the doctor said no problem and basically had me walking up and down as soon as I got home. Now I am in pain constantly with no more pain killers available, did I do too much too soon, and paying for it now, I have been doing laundry, cooking, sweeping, mopping, washing dishes, and working from home again. Did anyone else have no restrictions besides lifting during recovery? Thank you in advance for any information.

Sounds to be like you have over done it and your body is letting you know it needs some rest!

We have some excellent Checkpoints you might want to read through that can give you a guideline as to what is okay and not okay during recovery.

I would suggest taking it easy, get your feet up, and take some over the counter pain meds. If the pain is not eased with the over the counter meds, you need to call your doctor and let him know how you are feeling and what you should do. If your GYN is not helpful, call your GP.

in there and remember to ! S

It sounds you need to slow way down and take your meds, and send your family to the local Borders for several books. No doing anything until you have read them, eaten through a bag of Dove chocolates, and stayed on top of pain by faithfully taking your pain meds on time so that pain doesn't get away from you. NO NO sweeping!
princesses dont sweep.
princesses order out or get fam and friends cook for at least a week.
you really don't want to cause internal tearing and damage...that will slow healing way down.
blessings
TAH but kept one brave ovary - on 1/9 - two weeks ago today!

I agree! Call your doc asap and tell the nurse what's going on. You need pain relief to relax!

I agree, if you are not helped there, call your GP, but keep calling until you receive the relief you need to rest.

No more housework, cooking, et al. Go slow! I hurt just reading your post.

Peace and Love,
Brinks

Thanks for all of the great information, I will try my best to slow down, but in my house, my family thinks I am "all better" so getting help again is going to be difficult. I did call the doctor, and he said I should be fine to do all of the things I am doing, including sweeping, except for lifting anything greater than 8 pounds. So I am really confused compared to the information I am getting on this site. I do rest at the end of the day, when my husband comes home, most of my work is in the morning and afternoon, after dinner, I go to bed, and stay there for the rest of the evening until bedtime.

Erica,
Please try to slow down. I can't imagine being that active after MAJOR surgery. You are far from healed.
One of things, for me, that triggered increase pain and swelling was standing too long...I could not wash a full sink of dishes without suffering later in the evening.
Just a suggestion, perhaps you could print off some of the checkpoints from this site to share with your family...there is also a link to misterhystersister that may benefit as well.
You only have one chance to heal properly..
The last thing you want is to tear stitches or herniate your incision and start all over again.
Take care of you.

when I had my TAH my doctor told me no lifting,no sweeping,no vaccuming...to rest..do some walking, because it does help if you are doing some walking. I did everything I was told and just returned to work today at 6 weeks. I didn't have any complications and was using over the counter pain meds. by the third week.I know it is not easy when your family thinks all is well.I am a single parent of 2 and caregiver of my mom and it was difficult for me but I didn't want to double my healing time. Please try and take it easy otherwise you could end up back in the hospital. Will be keeping you in my prayers...God bless you

I had a TAH as well, and I too was not given very specific restrictions other than no lifting of driving, my paperwork just said "activity as tolerated", so I'm taking that to mean, if I don't fell up to doing it I shouldn't, plus I'm going mostly on the advice I've found here, and so I'm resisting the urge to vacuum (even though I wasn't specifically ordered not to). I guess some docs are more cautious than others. My feeling is, better to error on the side of caution, I don't want to have to look forward to trouble from adhesions down the road. Your job now is to rest, rest, rest!

I understand family thinking you are all better. My daughter thinks because I am on her case, that I MUST be better. I actually felt 'all better' yesterday and I am paying for it today. Not only incision pain and burning but internal pain as well. Yesterday, I cleaned the litter box, laundry, dishes and started to do the bathrooms until the pain came.

Here is what my DR sent me home with as far as restrictions:

For 2 Weeks:
NO Driving
NO Lifting Anything Over 8 Pounds
NO Baths
NO Swimming or Jacuzzi
NO Bending Over at the Belly
NO Sweeping
NO Vaccuuming
NO Sitting or Standing for Too Long
NO Laundry (I was surprised by this but it was explained that if it were summer, they would not restrict it...Their reasoning is that winter clothes are heavier especially when wet)...makes sense

I was confused about how much activity is too much or too little. He explained that a good rule for at least 2 weeks is one hour of rest for every 15 minutes of activity.

Please take this time to heal right. Allow yourself to be pampered.
