Tongue Coating

My mouth has not felt right since surgery but last night I noted a 'coating' on my tongue! Eww! Has anyone else had this? Wonder what is causing it?

Here is what I have taken post-op...

I am totally grossed out by this and wonder if anyone can help me make it go away!

No tongue coating but gigantic tongue ulcers which the doctor said were from stress probably. They are finally healing on day 10 post op without any intervention.

Call your doctor, please.

One of the possible side effects of Flagyl is an overgrowth of Candida on the tongue (basically thrush):
Mouth: A sharp, unpleasant metallic taste is not unusual. Furry tongue, glossitis, and stomatitis have occurred; these may be associated with a sudden overgrowth of Candida which may occur during therapy.

I would call your DR ASAP about this. Let us know what he/she says, OK?

I am so grossed out by this. I know that I will never take Flagyl again. I have an appointment at 3 pm to get it checked out.

Well, Flagyl is a pretty useful medication for certain types of infections. The downsides are (1) you can't drink any alcohol while taking it, as it causes nausea; and (2) it can create an imbalance that allows yeasts to grow out of control. If you eat yogurt with live cultures and/or take a probiotic while on Flagyl, that can help minimize your chances of getting thrush - but don't worry, it's quite treatable.

I could be thrush, I got that twice post-op It did start with the back of my throat and then my tongue and mouth... it was gross and ended up being painful until I got my prescription.

Good Luck

I agree with the thoughts of thrush. I too had several weeks of flagyl treatment prior to and after surgery...because of a ruptured abcess. Thrush can be treated with a 'swish and swallow' medicine...that I found difficult to take given the nausea and diarhea that I was already having. Was able to switch to a pill form for 5 days and that cleared up the thrush. Because the antibiotics kills off your normal gi bacteria you get this yeast infection. My do also had me taking a probiotic to help reestablish my normal gi flora. I found the gi problems related to the antibiotics to be one of my biggest post op challenges.
hope you are feeling better the doc.

Well, I went to the dr. He says he is not sure that it is thrush but acid reflux? But get this...he prescribed me the mouth rinse anyway? I am confused.

Did he do a swab and culture it to see if it's candida? Or just sort of peek in your mouth and get out his prescription pad?

Let's hope the mouth rinse does the trick.
