Nail Polish Allowed in Surgery?

This is my first post and I hope I am doing everything properly. My TAH is scheduled for 03MAR08. I seem to remember once being told that you should not wear nail polish during surgery. I don't know why. Is that true? Should I pass on the OPI Thrill of Brazil red on my toes on my next pedicure?

Nail Polish Allowed in Surgery?

I had surgery about eight weeks ago now, and I had pink nail polish on my toes during my surgery. Nothing was ever said to me about taking it off or not having any on to begin with so I just went with it.

If you have any doubts though, call your doc and ask what the routine procedure is for surgery where you are.

Best wishes!

I think it depends on the hospital because I had heard the same thing. BUT, my hospital never said anything to me. I went into surgery with my toes a glowing orange and my nails (which I have acrylic over) were the same color with designs.

I'd check with the hosptial and your .

The determining factor for the survival of your nail-polish would be that your ring finger must register a pulse-ox reading. My terminology for this device is "ET phone home?"[ Your finger will glow red very attractive.] Some nail-polish colors are not conducive in those situations.

If OPI doesn't cut the mustard they will remove the of charge!
When in doubt check it out!

Doctors and hospitals do differ on the nail polish issue. My hospital is one that says no polish at all on finger or toe nails. Be sure to ask to make sure.

Its best to call your Dr. and ask. I did and was told i could keep the acrylic nails on as long as my toes were clear.
Surgery is tomorrow!!! TAH

I had my toes done, but kept my fingers naked. Any time I've had surgery, I've always had socks on my least going in!

Specs, I hope you do well too. I really think it is just going in with a positive attitude that helps. I coudn't wait to be rid of those suckers! I'm sure I have a long way to go and some bumps along the way, but right now I feel pretty good!

Thanks Beth... Im really ready to get this done and stop the pain and bleeding. I have 6 weeks off of work, a chance to relish the peace and quiet and concentrate on me, something i havent done in a long while!
Im also starting HRT since I am having ovaries removed also, and am having horrible hot flashes and insomnia.
