My surgery was on 1-29. I have not had a bowel movement since a couple of days prior to surgery. I have tried everything. I have been taking stool softeners. I have used suppositories. I have used enemas. Then last night I drank prune juice for the first time. So far nothing has helped. What else can I do. HELP!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to think of things that I've seen suggested. (I have been very blessed in this area - no issues.)

Uuuuuum, have you tried apples or applesauce? Do you drink tea or coffee (I think I saw something about hot beverages)? Oh, there is something I think called Miralax (sp) that others have suggested. Those are the only additional things I can think of.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Others will come along that can give options. You may want to call your .

Are you passing gas? If you are not at least passing gas, call your doctor and you might want to anyway. Coffee with cream is a great stool softener for some people, cafe mocha is even better.

I didn't do too bad after surgery, but occasionally did feel like I was sitting on rocks.

Good luck, I hope you find some relief.

I found eating lots of fresh fruit, drinking water, and walking helped. I also took stool softeners. I've heard Miralax is wonderful, but never tried it myself.

Since my surgery, I've found that Kashi bars and Activia yogurt keep things moving, and I've also added Benefiber to my daily routine - usually in the morning, mixed with oatmeal. It has no taste and will not thicken your food/beverage in the least. Definitely recommended.

Don't hesitate to check with your doctor if things don't improve! Good luck!

I've found Milk of Magnesia is the key for me. The thing is, it REALLY works...but like my doc said, the cure for that is to take another painkiller. If that doesn't work, and especially if you aren't passing gas, I'd call the doc. Good luck!!!

OOOh. This was the worst part of the whole thing for me as the constipation led to a whopping case of hemorhhoids. I was really suffering from the constipation.

These are the things that worked for me and now I am going every day better than ever.

1. Eat plenty of yoghurt with live cultures (or acidopholus tablets from the health food store.) This was the key thing for me as all the antibiotics we took in the hospital wipe out the good bacteria from your gut. Need to replenish them in order for the bowels to work OK. This is key.

2. Take metamucil or a fiber tablet 3x a day with a big glass of water each time.

3. A tbsp of mineral oil with each meal (going down to once a day once you get going.)

4. Plenty of veggies, fruits and water.

5. Coffee in the am.

Hang in,

I too suffered with constipation. Since my TAH/BSO I have not had any problems. I take 1 Fibercon in the morning with 1 Magnesium 250mg (OTC) and at bedtime I take 2 more fibercon. Once I started taking the Magnesium everthing has been working great. No More pushing, or Hemoroids!!

Hang in there, It does get better.

My only advice is do not do what I did! I got tired of it and caled the DR the nuse said laxative she meant milk of Magnesia. OK she may have said that but all I heard was laxative! I paid dearly! the pain and I got naseaous it is not a good thing so no matter what no laxative pill trust me on this one I suffered for 12 hours called the dr and he said thats what you get dont do that again! Mind you he did not say those exact words but I got the message loud and clear

I agree with the no laxative pill. Made the same mistake and paid for it. I was constipated 12 days after TAH and magnesium citrate finally worked along with a very large tap water enema.
