Hospital bill - Oh my!!

Wow!!! Your OR/surgery costs are huge. I wonder if that includes your surgeon's bills? For me, I'm guessing the "OR Services" on my bill is for the OR nurses and instruments/supplies they used.

i wonder if the length of surgery makes a difference. Do you know how long you were in surgery? My surgery was just under 2 hours... about 1 hour 45 minutes from what I heard. Did you have any complications where they might have had to bring in extra equipment or people?

Strange... even your room and board was higher than mine. Very interesting. Is your hospital a new hospital? I wonder if that could be... the hospital I was at has been there for years... i was actually BORN at this hospital 36 years ago! but, it has been totally remodeled and exanded over the years.

also, your anesthesia was a lot more than mine.... how interesting!!! Makes no sense....

Well, who knows.... interesting!

Hospital bill - Oh my!!

I received my bills about 5 days after surgery. I thought we had good insurance until I read these posts. Here is how mine broke down...

Hospital-24 hrs.- 20,389.25 / I pay : 975.96
Doctor- 2,900.00 / I pay : 417.00
Assisting Physician - 725.00 / I pay : 32.34
Anesthes. - 375.00 / I pay : 375.00 (b/c he was out of network.. like I had a choice)

I guess some help is better than none. I couldn't imagine having to pay all of that. I guess I am one of the fortunate ones. Best wishes to all.

sbkb03:
I would look into the anesthes. bill thru your ins. I had the same question when I was going in , because the same thing happend when my DH went in for his nose polyp surgery. Outpatient hosp (in net) doctor (in net) but when it came time for his surgery, 4 diff. anesth. introduced themselves to me.. I found out later that whoever is avail when actual surgery happens is who he got. What, I'm supposed to check with ins. just before his surgery?
If not in network, sorry dear, you have to do it awake? Ridiculous.
At any rate, I did question my ins. for that reason and they said we have a WRAP policy.. It is an acronym, but I don't remember for what, but they said as long as the ins. okayed the surgery, the doc, and the hosp., any anethesiolist would be covered. Does your insurance have advocates that can help you fight this? I wouldn't pay it until I exhausted my options.
Good luck.

Sheesh! My insurance must stink! I thought it was good, but after reading this I'm having sticker shock!! I haven't received a bill yet, just an Explanation of benefits and I'm looking at at least 2000 out of pocket. The hospital bill was 17K. (I'm a teacher too!)

Julie...lol.
I'm also on my husband's ins. plan, but I have an individual plan through my work, so they use that one. I'm wondering if they can bill dh's for the uncovered portion. I doubt it. wishful thinking probably.

Nancy,

I think once the principal policy is exhausted they can bill a secondary policy...not sure how deductibles would work?????

Thanks..I think I will. The co-insurance is what confuses me the most. Most of the stuff that says what I owe says..."co-insurance" and I can see I've met my annual of 1700, plus my 300 ded., so the rest they should cover right?
