How long is your abdominal incision numb?

Hi everyone,

I had a TAH 13 days ago. My skin is totally numb all around my incision. I think this is normal because I've read this has happened to others on this board.

But, what I'm wondering is how long does it take to get the feeling back around the incision? I'm hoping this is not permanent and I'll eventually have total feeling.

I actually don't even like touching that area around my incision because it just is kind of eerie to me to touch that area and I can't feel it.

And, when the sensation does start to come back what does it feel like (meaning, is it a prickly tingly sensation, or something like that)? And, how long does it take to get the FULL feeling back? Does it come back fast, like in a day, or does it take weeks or longer for the sensation to fully come back (I'm talking about from once you first start noticing the sensation coming back).

Thanks!!

How long is your abdominal incision numb?

At 6 months post-op, I still don't have total feeling back. I've read posts from women who have said it takes quite awhile. I notice some tingling at times also. It comes and goes, and sometimes the area feels more numb than others. That's just my for what it's worth.

How long is your abdominal incision numb?

Loves to Run

I was told it can take up to a year for the nerves to repair themselves, if at all. I'm almost 3 years post-op and am still numb, but it's nowhere near as extensive as it was in the early post-op weeks. I'm entirely used to it now and it doesn't bother me at all, and am only reminded of it when I see a question like yours.

I remember the itching but not being able to feel the scratching and a sore/burning sensation as the nerve endings came back to life. Everyone's different though ~ some find the feeling comes back quickly and others find it never comes back.

We have an article <link> Numbness which has some more information.

Hope this helps!

How long is your abdominal incision numb?

When the sensation started coming back after it was numb, it came back slowly and I didn't really pay much mind to it. From time to time even now being 3.5 months out I still can't pick up heavy items so I am more mindfull of that, I have recently got back on the treadmill slowly and talk about feeling great. When I was about 3 weeks post op I started slow walked on the flat part of my driveway it did help alot in the healing process. Hope everything goes well for you!

How long is your abdominal incision numb?

I had huge surgery 7 years ago due to Breast cancer and I have a smile scar that goes hip to hip and I still don't have feeling back. Trust me, it's really is no big deal. You forget about it after awhile and if you itch there it is weird, but as I said you get used to it.

How long is your abdominal incision numb?

Not exactly the same thing, but I had surgery about a year ago to correct 2 herniated disks. My incision is on the front of my neck and it was numb, same as my abdominal incision. I would say it probably took about 3 months or so for the numbness to go away. Of course the skin on the neck is much thinner, but I have normal feeling there now. I am still pretty numb near my belly incision, but not as much as right after surgery. I hope that was a little bit helpful.

How long is your abdominal incision numb?

my surgery was oct 31, 07 and I still don't have any feeling from about my belly button to about one inch below my incision. You are so right about the itching. It feels weird to have an itch and then not feel the scratch.

How long is your abdominal incision numb?

There are parts of mine that are still numb but it's not unusual. i also have a good size incision from having my appendix out and I still to this day can't feel that but I'm use to it. Someone above mentioned having a smily face incision, that's a great way to look at it, thanks now I can say I smile all the time even when people don't see it LOL!
