Abdominal Hysterectomy

I am going to vent and I am getting very depressed with this not healing and feeling that it will never end.

I had my hysterectomy October 9th. It was a route procedure of the uterus and ovaries. 40 minutes after the surgery, I was bleeding over 1 liter of blood. This was told to my husband. So they rushed me into the ER again and did a vertical incision to seal my vein that did not seal. Afterwards, it took four pints of blood and I believe two pints of plasma. I was in deep pain. I was in the hospital for 6 days. I was extremely sick. I could not keep anything down till the 4th day. My poor husband cleaned me up more then once because it was hard for me to get up from bed quick enough. I survived, thankfully to my husband and several friends. I took iron pills for over 2 months. Oh, I must not forget that I am allergic to Neosporin. I did not know till my incision got really infected. So I received another cream to calm that down.
I was in bed for two more weeks, my husband made me walk around the house as much as possible. I was extremely weak for over two weeks. I could not even brush my teeth with much strengthen. Brushing my hair was very hard, there was lots of other stuff. I am sure some of you can understand. Well, I survived the whole ordeal. My family doctor said that it would take at least 6 months to fully recover.

This weekend I noticed that my incision is swollen, just half of it and in pain. I have been having abdominal pains. He said that it looks like skin irritation but when he examined me I was in pain from him feeling around. He said that he could open up the incision and re-seal it but there is no fluid coming out and everything looked OK. He also said that it could be scar tissue but if he goes in now, he might have to go in again in six months. Plus, he wants me to go to the Gastro to check my colon too. He knows my history.

Does anyone have a suggestion. I am going to my gastro doctor first. Has anyone had this rare nightmare. This is what I am told.

Abdominal Hysterectomy

Hello -

I don't know about your particular complication but I have had a ton of my own. I had my original TVH on Nov 6th, had a bunch of complications and I am now 12 days out from major abdominal surgery again. I so empathize with all your going through and your feelings of frustration and will this ever end. I feel the same way!

Good luck to you and I'll keep you in my prayers,

Abdominal Hysterectomy

Starbgirl,
I feel for you!!! My surgery was almost 2 years ago. It was suppose to be vaginal, but I hemorraged and so they cut me from hip bone to hip bone. I also had to have 4 pints of blood. The recovery was slow and hard. Then about 4 months into the recovery I started getting a hernia. I wasn't about to go through another adobminal surgery at the time. So of course like a real dummy I waited until a year later! By then it was huge. They had to cut me over 7 inches again to repair it. That was in the first of Sept. I still don't feel like I have recovered. I am wondering when and if you ever really do recover!

Just know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. You seem to have had way more than your share, and much more than me! Hang in there and pamper yourself as much as possible! I wish you the best!!!!

Abdominal Hysterectomy

Melaine, I am sorry to hear about your hernia. That is what I thought was going on. My incision is from belly button to abdominal. How are you feeling?

Starbgirl, November 6th is my birthday date. How are you feeling? If I may ask what kind of complications did you have? Are you doing better?

I do feel like I am never going to recover. I need to go see the GI but I know she is going to run me through several test. Thank you Sisters!

Abdominal Hysterectomy

Hi melanie and hello,

Wow - we have all been through so much. Melanie - two surgeries is tough! I think that is what is kicking my butt, so I can imagine you are still in the healing process. I made an appointment with my primary care Dr for next Tuesday. I'm going to ask for her help to regain my formerly excellent health and stamina.

Hello - I had my original TVH on Nov 6th. I was dicharged on the evening of the 7th. I was back in the hospital on the 8th with my first complication as I was witholding 1200 cc's of urine. OUCH! I was discahrged again the next day with a UTI and the cath to go home. About 2-3 weeks later I got a serious infection of my vaginal cuff. Heavy antibiotics and two CT scans later I was finally feeling better and on the road to recovery. Fast forward to Tuesday Feb 6th. I woke up with a little pain in my side - no biggie except it was. By that evening the pain was awful and I developed a fever. I saw my Dr at 8:30 the next morning and by then I was already septic from 2 huge abdominal abscesses. I had to have another surgery. When they got in there they discovered that the abscesses encompassed my ovaries, tubes and appenidix. Plus to make matters worse the whole mess was adhered to my intestines. My Dr had to call in another surgeon to dissect the whole mess off of my bowels. I had to have 2 blood tranfusions. So I now have a lovely hip-to-hip incision plus another small one where I had a drain in my abdomen for 6 days after surgery. Of course I also lost my ovaries which made me really sad. But all in all I am doing well and VERY happy to be here. My Dr let me know I could have died from this and got to him in the nick of time.

Ladies - I also wish you the best and hope in time we can all get back to normal. I am two weeks out from my second surgery today so I'm still in the weeds. My Dr let me know I cannot go back to work out of my home until the end of March!! Luckily, I have been with my company for 13 yrs and although it is NOT the scope of my job they have agreed to let me work from home until then. That will help with the bills which I haven't seen yet. Yikes!!!

Hugs to you both,

Starbgirl
