Vaginal Cuff

I'm in my 4th week and have been seeing the term Vaginal Cuff. Please forgive me my ignorance but what exactly does that mean and since I had a TVH did I get one?
Please don't laugh me off the board for this silly question.

Vaginal Cuff

Hey, I'm not really sure either, so it's ok!

I think it refers to the top of our vaginas that are sown shut, with the cervix removed. Not sure, but that seems to be it. I don't like to think about it....it sounds gross huh? :confuse:

Vaginal Cuff

It does sound gross and my Dr. never mentioned it and I do plan to put that at the top of my questions at my six week appt.

Vaginal Cuff

Ladies:
That is exactly what it is... When they remove the cervix and uterus (total hysterectomy) they need to sew the end of the vagina so that no bacteria or infection gets into your abdominal area during bathing, sex, etc... I have heard it described like sewing the toe in a sock..

Vaginal Cuff

I was told if you have a TVH they remove your cervix so then you would have to have a vaginal cuff, right? Why don't MD's explain these things to us, I had TVH also.

Vaginal Cuff

it is when your cervix is removed and the top of your vagina is sewn shut. if you had a vaginal hysterectomy, you have a vaginal cuff. and i agree..i cant imagine a dr not telling a patient this and giving them a choice

Vaginal Cuff

Hi Havaheart66!

First of all, when I read the words in your post above......"Please don't laugh me off the board for this silly question".......I felt so bad that you would think that. No question is silly.........this board is all about.....women helping women. Ask away.......it's only in asking that we become richer with knowledge.

I just had my TAH on Feb. 8, 08. I too, found the subject of "vaginal cuff" and wondered, then put it on my list of questions for my follow-up with the doctor. I read about it and thought that I must have had a vaginal cuff too. Ironically, my doctor called me later that same day I read about it, after I came home from my surgery, and I asked her if she did a vaginal cuff. She said yes she did and that it was so that the cavity where the uterus was, would be closed off to any future bacteria. She just forgot to tell me because she does these surgeries weekly and she just forgets to tell all her patients. I like my doctor very much, she is very warm-hearted and my surgery was a positive experience, but I think she should have told me about the vaginal cuff during the pre-surgery
appointment...hmmmmm.....well, I'm glad I know now!

Have a restful day! I'm at my 2 week mark so I'm still just resting and watching movies!

Take care, Irish Bridie

Vaginal Cuff

Thanks for all the answers. I'm sure I probably have a vaginal cuff and will ask my Dr at my next appt. I do find it strange that it wasn't mentioned but as Irish Bridie said Dr's probably do so many surgeries they forget we don't know all the Dr. lingo.
I am very thankful for this website. I was so scared and emotional before my surgery and everyone has been so helpful pre-op and post-op. And many times I've been able to find an answer by just browsing through other posts. Or through the Articles on the website. And the Hysterectomy Checkpoints have been very helpful as well.
