Is it okay to use a treadmill at 3+ weeks post-op?

Hi Loves to Run. Actually I did see your other thread about the microwave and I took your advice and started doing it myself. It was a great idea! I used to just walk sporadically, with no set time, but now I do a full 5 - 15 minutes at a time - depending on how I feel. When I'm more dizzy in the morning I only do 5 minutes, but as the day goes on I work my way up to 15 minutes. I hope to increase it to 20 soon (I even told my DH about that thread). I was not active much before surgery (except for the walking I do for work) so I need a little more motivation to get active now... This surgery has actually opened my eyes to taking better care of myself. Thanks for sharing your great ideas.

Is it okay to use a treadmill at 3+ weeks post-op?

I was going crazy not being able to get my walks in. The weather here has been between -20 and 25 degrees outside the entire time since I've had surgery. Very very cold and windy making walking outside impossible. I bought a new treadmill last week, my old one died, and I have been thoroughly enjoying my nice slow paced 20-30 minute walks on it. I've just been listening to my body as I go and haven't had any problems. I go for my 6 week checkup next Thursday and hopefully will be released to start using my exercise ball again! I can't wait!

I had a TAH and started using my treadmill at a very slow pace after one week. The doctor told me to walk each day and I live in a very hilly neighborhood. It was easier to walk on the treadmill and I was able to control my pace. Went to the mall and got lightheaded because I tried to walk to fast. Now, at 2-1/2 weeks post, I can walk 3 miles on the treadmill and I already feel better than pre-op.

I also had a TAH, and started walking on the treadmill 7 days post-op for 15 minutes at a leisurely pace. But then again I am the owner of a gym and had one of my staff supervising me the first few times. Now 6 weeks post-op, I am walking in a brisk pace for one hour every day without supervision and I feel much better than pre-op!

Perhaps your DH can supervise you for the first couple of times?

Take care!
