Hematoma/Blood clot, post-op

I had a TVH and bladder lift on Jan.23/08 surgery went well but several days later developed a UTI and a complex blood clot. The blood clot is not a DVT, it is located under my bladder and my surgeon had initially contemplated a 2nd surgery to remove it but decided instead to monitor it to see if it will disolve. Three weeks later its still there but disolving very slowly. Symptoms include pain ranging from minor discomfort to severe pain in vaginal area and lower abdomen that radiates into my left side; and I am also experiencing degrees of discharge from light brown to light red bleeding.

I cannot seem to find information on this. Has anyone had this happen to them? My surgeon is not sharing any information, only says it will disolve in time but cannot estimate how long. In the meantime I am at home attempting to cope with varying levels of pain using pain meds, heating pads, pillows, etc.

I am also supposed return to work in two weeks but don't know how I will do this successfully - I am exhausted, in pain and fed up.

Any suggestions or information you can share with me would be greatly appreciated.

Kelst,
Hematomas do reabsorb, however, they are slow to do so. A heating pad will encourage this process. (CAUTION: Be very careful!! If you have any incisional/abdominal numbness you could get a burn from the heating pad by having it too hot or on too long.) This is considered a complication to your surgery so I would suggest you ask him to extend your medical leave until you are more comfortable. In the meantime, I hope your pain subsides and you feel better soon!!! Best wishes!!

Thanks for the quick response, much appreciated. The heating pad and I have been constant friends since I came home from the hospital I have also been applying Arnica cream which is supposed to help with bruising/swelling etc. however I've not noticed any results with that.

Getting extra time may prove difficult as my insurance company has a maximum of 6wks however I will ask my surgeon if she can assist me with an extension or modified work options (i.e. work from home, 1/2 days, etc.)

All the best,
Kelst
