seeking advise about an outing 1 week post op

I didn't think about the hugs - yeah, might be a little uncomfortable for you and the little ones probably would not understand being kept at arms length. I was out and about quite a bit shortly after surgery, but mostly short errand type trips, where I wouldn't offend anyone by needing to leave when I felt I'd had enough. Those little trips satisfied my need to get out of my house without overdoing it the first couple of weeks.
I'm with you on the food - I would have to be in pretty bad shape before I'd leave someplace without getting fed, LOL.

I have missed several of my children's school affairs in this past week, and I will miss several more in the coming 2 weeks. It is hard to stay home and listen to them leaving the house without me, believe I have shed a few tears about this(hormones play into this too I'm sure). My son is home with a fever today and my husband is his nurse. I know as hard as it is for me to stay away and not care for him, I must. So....I was just thinking with you being youth minister....and all the well meaning hugs and kisses and handshakes!?! Believe me, I am not normally a germ freak at all, I am a laid back mom of 3. I do believe in hand washing in my normal life...but these next few weeks....I am really overdoing the germ thing to protect my body.
I so do not want to fall behind on my recovery process...summer break is coming at the end of May for my 3 and I want to be ready to go...and enjoy our time together then...all healthy and in tip top shape....
Continue to feel better with each passing day

I would suggest these things, if you would like to go on an outing, post-op 1 week: First, if you are still on prescription pain meds, DON'T DRIVE YOURSELF, have DH or one of your church friends take you; and Second, know when to cut-off your visiting and go home. Week 1 post-op, my DH drove me to the local restaurant for breakfast. I lasted an hour or a bit less and said clearly that I needed to get back home.
Good luck and all my best to you!

my dh and i were just laughing (and it hurt) because he is about to go to the track and i said "hey, i can go with you and take about 10 minutes to walk one lap then go rest in the van"....he looked at me and said, i will take you to do that one day but its too soon to do that. he also said he knows that i am a go, go, go person and that i am going stir crazy but to please let more time go. i wasn't serious about going with him but we started laughing because i made him promise not to tell anyone that i am getting antsy!!! he laughed and promised. he is starting to get bored with staying home too but at least he gets to leave!!! we are going to watch some movies together.

Good for your husband! I tried to go for a walk in my neighborhood at day 8 and that went badly. My dr. told me I could go on walks at day 14, so for me that meant day 8. Bad bad. I walked on an indoor track at my gym at day 14 and felt just fine. I guess my dr. knew what he was talking about.
I can understand the cabin fever, truly I can. Once you are a little stronger, maybe go to the mall when it's not busy? You can get a pretty good walk in and there are places to sit down if you need to take a break.

jillclair66 - it's funny that you mention going when it is not busy. Once I was cleared to drive, I would go to places like Target or KMart - just to get out. But I would only go during the week. When the weekend came, I never wanted to go anywhere for fear that there would be too many people. I thought that I was alone in that thinking.

I am 6 weeks post-op and just went out on a Saturday - last week.

I'm glad you decided to stay home. I'm also the type that never stays still. oddly, I've been finding it very easy to just lay on the sofa and watch TV / Movies all day. its scary in a way - I never thought I could be THIS lazy. I actually slept straight through the night last night - didn't even need a potty break ..... I slept for NINE hours !

Great decision! I agree with Daragh with the flu season in full force. The vaccine isn't doing the job as well as hoped. Being in large groups of people at this point might not be the prudent thing so soon after surgery. I hear it's settling in the chest with higher fevers. Coughing would be a painful thing with a TAH. It's fabulous to hear you are doing so well in your recovery!! Best wishes!
