One month post-op with huge belly ~ help!

I wonder if the personal trainor would have any information he/she could get for you on the subject? The other thing you could check into if you wanted is some advice from a homeopathic doctor..totally different type of doctor, but it may be worth checking into.

I wish you only the best in dealing with this..

cheers.

One month post-op with huge belly ~ help!

I noticed a big decrease in belly swelling at about seven weeks post op. (I'm at eight and a half right now.) My belly is not back to pre-surgery size, but there was an obvious change to me at about seven weeks. Before the seven week mark, it was a gradual decrease over time -- not so obvious -- and it continues to improve. I like to compare the swelling to other trauma to the body -- like a severe sprained ankle, for example. We probably wouldn't worry too much if that ankle stayed swollen for several weeks, and the trauma from surgery has to be more severe than a sprain! Remember that we all recover differently, so seven weeks is probably not a magic point for everyone, but think positively that your magic point will come, too.

Depending on the type of surgery you had, you're abdomen has experienced different degrees of trauma.... I can only tell you what my doctor told me when I asked him to describe exactly what was done to me during my surgery:

He said that once they made the incision, the muscles were parted and my abdomen was held open with a tool used to stretch the incision so that he can see inside. Then my abdomen was packed full of "surgical cloths" to soak up blood and keep the other abdomenal organs out of the way. My bladder was actually taken out of my body to make room to work. Then he removed the parts that needed to come out - uterus/tubes/ovaries/cervix and several very large veins. Then my bladder was placed back into my body, the packing was removed and everything was stitched back up.

Given all of that, is it any wonder that our bellies are swollen? Our bladder and intestines have been touched and moved... and our internal and external incisions need time to heal. My doctor said that internally, it takes a full year to heal.

I have also noticed that the more I excersize or the more active I am, the bigger my belly gets. I have accepted the fact that my belly is not going to be flat again any time soon... so I'm just watching what I eat and trying to stay active, but not too active. When I notice the swelling, I tone it down a bit.

Good luck to everyone!
