Treating my incision

Hello! I was wondering if anyone else on this site is managing an open wound. My incision was leaking after week one and the surgeon took out my stitches. Now, I have this open wound that is 18cm. wide and 4cm. deep. I have a wound vacuum treatment on. What I really want to know is how badly this will set my healing back. Does anyone have an open incision?

Treating my incision

I had a hip-to-hip incision which was left open to heal from the inside out.

It did take ten weeks for the incision to close up completely. My wound care instructions were as follows:

In the morning, a shower. Let the warm water cascade over the incision area, but not hit it directly. No soap or anti-bacterial treatment at all on incision. Then I was to allow the entire area to air-dry for 30-45 minutes. (I timed my morning shower so I'd get to watch a particular program as I was drying. ) After that, dh would put dry dressings on the wound and then the abdominal binder would go on. Same thing in the evenings except no shower -- in the evenings I was to take a warm, wet (and of course clean!) towel and press it on the area... then air dry again.

They also told me not to try and force the skin together -- that new skin would grow beneath. I was skeptical, but it did finally happen.

We all heal differently, so don't rely on my experience as being indicative of yours. Even though the wound was still open, I returned to work and most of my normal activities prior to the wound closing all the way.

Hope this helps.

Treating my incision

I did a search for wound vacuum and your thread came up. I see that you had a wound vacuum on in Feb. How long did it take for your incision to heal and how long did you have to have the vac? My TAH was 7/14/08 and I got an infection in my incision and the Dr opened it up again. Now I have had the vac on for almost 2 weeks. It hurts like crazy when they do the dressing change. I'm just looking for some feedback. I ask the dr and the nurses how long I can expect to have this vac, but no one gives me any answers. Mine is also 4 cm deep and 9 cm long. There is also a tunnel that needs to close too.

Any comments would be appreciated.
