I'm on my 4th week post-op (TAH 2/13) and am still using the abdominal binder that was given to me during my hospital stay. I feel that I won't be able to part with it.
How long did everyone wear theres?

I wore mine for six weeks, and I loved it, too. Not only did it give me good support, but it held all of my surgical dressings on so I didn't have to use any adhesive tape!

At about the six week mark, it began feeling uncomfortable. That was my signal that it was time to say a fond farewell.

I wasn't given one and asked my Dr. about a week post-op and she told me not to wear one. Hmmm - go figure. I am still wearing my granny panties, and hope I can go back to my bikinis soon. I tried a week or so ago and it hurt so that didn't last.

I am 9 days out from surgery, and I also have a belly binder. When I was at the doc's office yesterday to get my staples out (ouch!), I asked him how long I needed to wear the binder, and he said I could wear it as long as I feel it is helping me. I tried a half hour or so without it today, but I didn't like that at all. I think I'll keep the stupid thing for a while. I hate putting it on by myself (I'm single and live alone), but once it's on it's heaven. Only time will tell, I guess.

Yah I was actually wondering that same question. I have had mine since I woke up from surgery, only came home today, but I absolutely love it, it helps with the pain immensely. I seriously wouldn't even wanna try and walk around, sit or get up without it. It is a huge difference without it, I don't wanna part with it, but I can see that it will "hopefully" get to the point where it is uncomfortable, and I am ok without it, because it is definitely not something that I would have worn pre-op lol. Not really a girdle type girl.

Never had one prescribed so just have been using my trusty little pillow which has been fine. Of course I had LAVH rather than TAH so there may lay the difference.

I find it so amazing of all the different approaches Drs. take to the same operation. Not saying any are wrong, just different.

Mine was on when I woke up, kept it on til the staples were out. Folded up when I was in bathroom, folded down when done, worked great.

Dr. said at 2wk. I could do whatever I wanted. Keep using it or not. I choose to try it without and have been without ever since.

For me though, if it was to tight it gave me pain in many other places, weird.

Have a great day ladies

I used mine for about least 6 weeks....

I stayed off work for a full 7 weeks and I think my recovery went quite well.

The benefit for me was that it felt like the binder kept everything in place. I had the vertical incision - so I really appreciated the confinement. I padded the incision well, then wore the band. It also mentally seemed like my belly bulge wasn't as obvious with clothes on.

Prior to my surgery, I asked my doctor about them. She said she'd prescribe one if I wished. Which leads me to believe she wouldn't have, if I hadn't asked. But she said I could wear it till I didn't need it anymore.

Different strokes for different folks I guess....

I asked for one also, after reading here. Got it the day after surgery. It is great when I am up and about...but the 2nd days after surgery I had such bad gas and abdominal cramping I took it off. I didn't wear it for a couple of days. I wear it now only when I am really moving or if my lower belly is aching. My doc told me not to wear it when resting (probably because of the swelling I had).
It does give a wonderful freedom when you don't have to hold up the belly though!
