When does appetite come back?

I am 4 days post op from a TAH and unable to eat anything well anything with protein. I have only been able to keep down broth, apple sauce, popsicles and fruit cups. I have tried chicken noodle soup with no avail I gag on the noodles. Its the most frustrating of my entire recovery. I have tried eating white fish cooked with no spices and could not even get that down. Is this normal? And when did you get your appetite back? I am not having much pain at all except the occasional gas pains which I take Gas X and stool softners. Any other suggestions of what I might can eat to keep my strength up would be greatly appreciated! I love to eat and have always eaten healthy but I cannot even eat a piece of wheat breat without feeling like I am going to get sick.

When does appetite come back?

I was nauceous for a full week. Today was my first "real" meal. It was confusing because the dr. put me on a regular menu my 2nd day in the hospital but I think that was a mistake. Give yourself a few more days.

When does appetite come back?

After-surgery I was advised to drink Gatorade to keep hydrated. I wasn't interested in food for weeks. First it was the pain meds, then it was hormone issues. I'm still not right. But if you can't eat, at least keep hydrated.

My favorite finds along the way- Goats milk... is well tolorated and highly nutritious. Coconut water... is great for electolytes. Anything cold, like ice cream, pudding and jello.

I hope you get feeling better soon. It takes some time but you will.

When does appetite come back?

I have to ask...with TAH, how soon after surgery did you come home?

The reason I ask is that my answer will change.

I had LSH....so I was eating solid foods within six hours of surgery. However, 20 years earlier, when I had my gallbladder removed the old fashioned way...I did not have solid food for three days and I was in the hospital for seven days.

When does appetite come back?

I had no appetite for about 2 weeks. My doctor told me to expect this and that it was nothing to worry about. Slowly my appetite came back. I just tried to eat a little bit at each meal and not force it. It is important , though, to stay well hydrated. You'll be OK

Blessings, Lisa

When does appetite come back?

I had no appetite for anything for about the first 10 days, but I forced myself to eat because I had to eat. But, I pretty much just lived on bland stuff for 10 days... lots of crackers, cream of wheat, and I ate fresh fruit to help get my digestive system to work. I did drink a lot of water.... water definitely appealed to me.

I will be 5 weeks post-op on Monday, and I still am having issues with my appetite. The things that I loved to eat before my surgery do not at all sound good to me. Most food does not sound good to me, BUT I am eating, obviously, because I have to eat. I am just snacking a lot because big meals do not sound good to me right now.

But, what I do is whenever anything sounds good to me, I eat it at that moment no matter what it is or what time of day it is. I figure since I haven't had much of an appetite, if I do get any sort of craving, then I eat it, or I send my DH out to get it!! haha.

And, what I find even now is when I do eat, I cannot eat very much. I feel like I get full really fast. I think that has to do with the swelling, possibly. Maybe my stomach is getting squished because my belly is still swollen.

I don't know when my full appetite will come back. But, right now during my recovery and low appetite, I try to make sure it's healthy (fruits and veggies and protein) because I am not eating a huge amount of food so I want to make sure I get all that I need in my body. I want to make sure I am healthy and not depriving my body.

I think it's very normal to have no appetite the first week after surgery. But, after that, if you have a hard time getting your appetite back, just listen to your body, and when your body craves something, even if it sounds strange at the moment, then eat it, because it's probably your body telling you that you need it. :-)

Good luck!!!! Hang in there. :-)

When does appetite come back?

I didn't eat anything solid for the 3 days I was in the hospital because of nausea. I only wanted bland things when I got home - crackers, toast. I think I ate my first "real" food about a week after my surgery.

My appetite still isn't fully back and I find that I feel full with much smaller portions than I did before the surgery.

The upside is that I've lost 9 pounds. I had been wanting to lose about 10 before summer, but wasn't expecting the surgery to be what got me there!

When does appetite come back?

I was in the hospital for 3 days and the only things I wanted to eat were eggs, ice cream and pudding. Once I got home I ate mostly yogurt and Ensure or Boost for a couple of days. Solid food held no interest - unless it was chocolate LOL. I still don't eat as much as I did pre-op but I do have an appetite - I just get full faster.
You might want to try getting some Boost or Ensure. They have lots of vitamins / minerals and lots of protein, and they don't taste all that bad either !

When does appetite come back?

I still do not have much of an appetite at 5 weeks. Of course did'nt before the surgery. The dr. thinks that it is the anemia. I really just don't want to eat. I can go all day and not realize that I have not eaten. So I have to force myself to eat small amounts with the help of everyone reminding me. I also think that this is a byproduct of the morphine usage for the 3 years prior to spine surgery. Yes Ensure is pretty good, the chocolate one that is.
