what is a vaginal cuff and can it get infected?

Hi Sisters,
I began exercising (cardio and lifting weights) about two weeks ago. My vaginal hysterectomy was three months ago. I had the all clear at 6 week post-op checkup to resume normal activties.
After the second workout, which was in the afternoon, me and my husband...um, got it on. But I bled! And now since then, I've been all irritated down below, and although there is no discharge and no more bleeding, I 'smell' different.
I have been reading about vaginal cuffs and wondered if I hurt myself somehow with lifting weights and sex?
The other question is, do women who have had hysterectomy's have more cases of bacterial vaginal infections???

And yes the vaginal cuff can get infected. Just to be on the safe side why not call the Dr and ask them. As far as if women have more bacterial infections with a hysterectomy. I don't have the answer for that but i'm sure other sisters will be along to share soon.
Good luck and your in my prayers

I had vaginal cuff cellulitis but it was at week 2 or 3- not after getting all better- I was already still bleeding- but it did smell funny, bad- and I hadn't had sex. Do you hurt? I ached where the incision was, and the discharge wasnt' just bloody it was watery- even gushy at times. It was nasty! I hope you don't have that. It wasn't easy to get rid of. You need to call your doc and see what's up.

what is a vaginal cuff and can it get infected?

Update: Went to the doctor. He had to cauterize the cuff in two areas with silver nitrate. Since this happened last week, there was time for a BV infection to set in. So two things going on at once. I have to go back in a week to see if there's further need for more cauterization. :-(

Has anyone else out there had this granulation appear THREE MONTHS after the surgery? I had the all clear at six weeks post-op. But now there's a problem? What can I expect? Doc treated it like it was no big deal. To me, it was. My butt cheeks were shaking like jello the whole time I was in the stirrups, and continued to on the elevator after I left!

Yes, apparently I still have some- yeah- sure don't like the doc messing with my incision- not fun! The doc found I have fluid in my pelvic area and said she needed to do a laproscope to figure out why- might still have the infection but in my abdomen somewhere- or something else- so I'm scheduled for surgery on Monday- you'd think that by now I'd be okay- it's been 4 freaking months!

I am so sorry you are having this difficulty. I asked my doc about the vaginal cuff and she said I have one and it is essentially creating a tighter closure for the top of your vagina because after the vagina is the cuff and after the cuff is the inside of you! Bowels, space, etc. I have read some folks on here have okay experiences and some with difficulty like yours, some say it doesn't affect them sexually and some have had some difficulty, some have them sewn right to their abdominal muscles and some have them just lightly tacked in place. I guess a discussion with your doc is the best way to find out what is up with you.....which it sounds like you wisely already did. Hope your road to recovery is smooth and non-eventful from now on, take care!

What exactly do you "smell" if you get an infection... Mine isn't like it used to be... I noticed if I don't take a shower everyday I get a little odor, but nothing I think anyone but myself can smell. I do have a small amount of discharge, but it neither gushes nor is it bloody. I feel like when I urinate, it kind of dribbles out more than a stream so wondering if there is some moisture from that in the labia.
