Weight issue not adding up - puzzled??

This is really bugging me - because it makes no sense. I had a 690 gm uterus and fibroid taken out - plus did all that bowel prep and no eating the day ahead - but I come out of the operation 4 lbs heavier!! 6 days post-op I am back to where I started. So what happened to the "cantaloupe" they took out? Logically I should weigh less, don't you think? Explanations anyone? I though for sure I would come out 2lbs lighter ATLEAST! Really bummed....

You are still swollen and that is a lot of fluid your body is hanging on to!

What's your fluid balance like? I have a swelly belly, and some swelly ankles. I think part of it is the iv fluids.

Weight issue not adding up - puzzled??

It took me about a week to get rid of all the fluids and then I found I had lost weight!

Weight issue not adding up - puzzled??

Haha yah, I was actually wondering the same thing. Doc told me that she removed a cement block from my abdomen lol, and I weighed myself today and I weigh the same as before. My appetite has been very low, and all that so I figured I would have lost weight. However, I have been guzzling down water like a madwoman. I also have major swelly belly I guess due to having a TAH it may be the cause? So hopefully I just have swelling and severe water retention lol. Otherwise I'm gonna be pretty confused haha!

Healing requires a lot of fluids, as does metabolizing pain medication. So even though you are peeing a flood every 10 minutes, you are still retaining a lot of water. At 6 weeks my weight has broken even. I lost about 5 pounds at one point, but then I got my appetite back

I feel your frustration!!! Remember, this process is much like a marathon...not a sprint. lol Our bodies have to take time to heal, adjust, and figure out what's 'normal' now. I think women are in such a habit of being in control of nearly every aspect of daily life, that we forget we can't control the rate of healing just as we couldn't control the cause for this type of surgery in the first place.

Be patient. The more upset and anxious you are about the little things (and, in the grand scheme of things right now, weight is a little issue) the more slowly you'll perceive the actual process. Remember to rest, drink plenty of fluids, choose good nutritious fuel, and take your meds as prescribed. Before you know it, you will feel so much better, you'll hardly notice if you've lost any weight. And chances are good that you will have lost it---not even trying.

It is a strange phenomenon that when they remove a huge fibrous uterus, that we don't immediately become a lean, mean machine! It's my understanding that even though the uterus is huge and somewhat weighty, that won't make much difference to our actual weight. Go figure.

Now is not the time to diet, in MHO. Since my surgery six months ago, I have had no appetite, nothing sounds good or smells good. I have concentrated on healing and exercising to get my strength back after so many weeks 'lounging'. As it turns out, I have lost about 12-13 pounds. It will happen....just give it time.

Best wishes!

Weight issue not adding up - puzzled??

The same thing happened to me. When I got home from the hospital I weighed myself and I had gained about 5 pounds. I was distressed and my husbad said "hon, you haven't pooped for 4 days!" That made me laugh and put it all in pespective. My weight is now a few pounds under my pre-op weight. Take care of yourself!

Thanks for your feedback ladies

Ladybug8 so true - thanks for putting it in perspective. In the grand scheme of things, health and well being are so much more important than gaining a couple of pounds. I was baffled because the maths was just not adding up. Oh well back to rest and recuperation now....
