huge hematoma post-op 6days off pain meds

My first message so here goes. Surgery was Wed March 5,08. Everything fine at first not any bruising. Sent home and then... overnight a hematoma the size of grapefruit (the large ones) appeared on right side be the incision. Oh yeah total laproscopy. I am in very little pain. But I my hematoma is now the size of a big blue whale it even looks like it has teeth where stretch marks are. I was doing great yesterday but then had bleeding from vaginal area. I am now on complete bed rest with a girdle to bind and ice. The hematoma is putting pressure on cervix (sorry if spelled wrong). I really do not have any pain and I am trying to be good. but I do have trouble staying down. I will so my whale will go away. Anybody have any pointers. I am having trouble understanding this hematoma and complications related to it. I think it is cause I feel better now than before the surgery even with the hematoma .

Hi there! I also had a large hematoma following my hysterectomy. Mine was about 19x9x4 cm. and it laid along my incision in front of the abdominal wall.

I'm glad you're not experiencing any pain. You won't always, depending on where the hematoma is. I had lots of pain with my hematoma, and it's no fun.

The reason they have you on so much rest is that the doctors want to give you the best chance to let the hematoma reabsorb on its own. Most hematomas do in fact get better on their own, but sometimes it can take a while for the process to happen. While it is resolving, however, you don't want any trauma in the area -- therefore, all sorts of restrictions. You will need to follow the directions of the to the letter. I know, I know.... but now's the time to catch up on phone calls, movies, organize photos, whatever you can think of.

The doctors may also want you to be on your guard for any signs of infection (such as nausea, fever, the skin becoming hot to the touch, etc.) depending on your particular situation.

So right now, take full advantage of your status and stay off your feet. You still need to do some walking, but go very slow and don't exert yourself at all.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply

I needed your reply. I am now off of complete bed rest. The swelling is localized now on the bottom. The compression and ice have helped. I was up today for about 4 hours now I am resting again. The sun is shining, the cat is purring and I am feeling much better. Do you know about how long my purple whale will stay on my stomach? I think I will name him bubba. I mean if he is gonna be around for a long time then I need to name him. Other than being a little tired, I feel great. The doctor said I could substitue advil for the tylenol but since it was an anti-inflamatory like med that create bubba by thinning the blood, I think I will stick to the tylenot even though it doesn't work quite as well. Again thanks, I really needed to know that somebody else had one these things.
