What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

Like Pooodle and the article said, it's essentially the same process as spraining an ankle.

What happens in our bodies when we injure something is that lymph fluid collects in that area to heal the tissues. The fluid brings nutrients, bathes the area in natural lubricant, and provides cushioning during healing (imagine a sprained ankle without that!). Since our bellies have basically been assaulted by surgery, the lymph system is working overtime and brings a great deal of healing fluid to that area and the tissues. The natural lymph pathways have also been disrupted, so it takes a while to not only re-establish them, but get them flowing freely once again.

If you do a search for lymphedema or lymph massage, there's lots of information online. Of course don't take any action, like getting a massage, without the permission of your surgeon.

What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

That is probably the best explanation I've heard and it definately makes sense. More logical than anything my doctor has said.

What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

How can a doctor think it is all in our heads to have a swollen belly. The doctor has eyes doesn't he? My goodness!

I feel sore inside my belly and on the skin surface of it. Almost described as a burning sensation. Never had this with my cesearean in 1998. Definitly a post op abdominal phenomenon and post op vaginal phenomenon.

What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

My swelly belly went away completely around 6 months. I struggled with the weight for awhile because my Lupus went into a flare after surgery and I also had gallbladder surgery 6 months later. I ended up losing all the weight about 1 year after surgery. Don't stress too much about it, it stinks but in some ways I look better physically now than I did before the surgery. I think I was running around anemic most of the time from my periods. So, after my body had a chance to catch up I felt really good in a lot of ways that I didn't expect to.

You sound like you are doing really good. It is hard to be patient!

My Dr said at my appt on Thursday (5 weeks post op abdominal) that my swelling was due to all the bowel work and that when your bowels get messed with they get very swollen. He said like every one - patience

Swelly Belly

My told me that my would probably be like this permanently... Don't know if it's cause of my age... Guess I'll have to start working out so that the next time I see him I can get on the and prove him wrong.
Kind of discouraging...

What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

I hope it won't be like this forever PattiO..also JoAnne I can "feel" things "inside" also when I gently touch my tummy...it feels very odd but like 'lumps' which I am sure it likely is but odd none the less.

My tummy doesn't get any better/worse whether or not I rest all day or not but I do find that my skin on the top of the incision (tummy area) is shedding..do you ladies have this too?

Must be 'dead skin?'

Cynthia - I have the 'shedding" also. It looks like dry flaky skin or a mild sunburn (guess it goes with the sunburn feeling we've been having !). I thought it was just me !! Nice to know so many of these 'oddities' are actually normal !

Yesterday and today my stomach feels SOOOOOOOOOOOO stretched - its like the skin doesn't even fit over my stomach anymore. Its so uncomfortable -- but I was able to sleep on my stomach last night for the first time (go figure !). I feel bloated. I did not a thing today - just rested and took a nice long 2 hour nap to boot. No improvement in the tummy.

I'm assuming this isn't going to be forever and that it is indeed related to all the bowel work my doc had to do. I feel the lumps and bumps in me which I'm assuming are my intestines and bowels.

I had read so much about swelly belly before my surgery - but honestly, I didn't expect it to be like THIS ! I'm waiting for the alien to come bursting through !

What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

JoAnn -

I was waiting for the alien baby too! My belly was SO swollen my belly button popped out like I was 8 months pregnant!! I do know that the general surgeon who operated on my bowels said not to listen to the Gyn about the amount of swelling. He was a bit concerned. She said that in terms of being a bowle patient, the large swelling & the extra time to pass gas etc, was normal for her bowel patients. Of course that was early on when I was still in the hospital. I too was surprised it lasted so long at home.

Here's hoping those alien baby's return to the planet they came from. Soon!

What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

Starbgirl - you have me literally laughing at loud here ! I'm glad I'm 3 weeks post op; you know how much laughing hurts the first couple of weeks !
My belly button is still an innie right now - having it invert would definitely freak me out.
I tried wearing support panties today .... I lasted about an hour in them. There was no noticable difference in my appearance and the only thing they did was make me feel constricted (like I felt pre-op with all the endo ! not a feeling I want to relive).

<-- anti-alien dance !? worth a try !
