What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

Jo Ann -

I think your Dr then should meet me and we'll see what he says!! I have a swelly bellly too and tomorrow is my 6 weeks. I am down 12 pounds from my surgery (on both my Dr's scales!!) and at 5'3 that puts me at a disgusting 99 lbs!!! I seriously need to gain weight and I am LEAN from being a runner. Sooooo what would be my belly problem according to him???? Hello!!! IMO it seems we ALL have swelly bellies and unless everyone of us has lax muscles and weight gain - not true - then the real truth is that this surgery just does that. I really like the example someone gave about the sprained ankle and how long that swelling can last. My Dr said it is the bowels that swell and they will come down.

Don't feel badly!! Someday this will all be behind you and just a distant memory and you'll be saying - remember when I had my hyster......

Hugs,

What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

hate tyhat we all are experiencing or have experienced the swelly belly...but,I had it after my two vaginal deliveries, after my 2 c sections even worse and now after my TVH done on the 12th...Its been pretty irritating to say the least...I know after my c sections I had major abdominal cutting...well they were both bikini cuts but, even with the TVH which had no external cutting there is this welly belly...it does seem sometimes its the organs swelling around it...especially the stomach...must be due to the trauma of being invasive to the inside of us ...just my

What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

Joann,

I don't know.....I'm sorry, but that sounds like it is just a man speaking instead of a woman. I think too many women experience this "shift" in their middle for it all to be in our heads. I am trying to eat healthy, have never had a weight problem, and I've exercised for 35 years. Now, however, my stomach seems to be a different shape....???

What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

Well I'm 8 months post op and let me tell you my belly has gone down but it's still looking swelly. I think probably because it was so big before surgery, my uterus was the size of a 5 month pregnancy and then after the surgery and the swelling and all that it was really huge. I am losing weight and seems like the more weight I lose I can really see my belly. Anyway, be encouraged, it just takes time to get back to normal that's the way I look at it. I would have thought that I would have my washboard stomach again but I don't.

What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

Is there anybody out there 1-2 years post-op that is actually happy with their belly? Or were we all disillusioned
in thinking that we would have a flat belly after removing a 4 month alien from our abdomen? I cannot believe that there are not enough women that complain about this to make doctor's rethink the possibility that it could be swelling.

Is anyone else having trouble losing weight? I gained 10 lbs after surgery even though I don't look it, only in the belly, and my clothes fit the same as before. I have been working out like crazy and can normally lose weight without a problem. And I only have the 10 lbs to lost to get back to my normal 125. I've lost several inches since I started working out with my trainer but no weight. It has me baffled.

What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

You guys are the greatest ! You're right that we can't ALL be in the same boat if the swelly belly is more or less under our control.
I was also thinking about my weight gain. In order for me to gain that much weight I'd need to eat 1,000 calories a day more than I burned. I may be noshing here and there but there's NO WAY I've been eating over 2200 calories a day (I've had a subconscious calorie counter in my head since I was 16 and lost 25 lbs). I think at least part of my weight gain is the extra water in my stool - I take both a stool softener and a laxative daily (doctors orders) -- they both work by increasing the moisture in your stool. A good portion of the rest could be the fluid from the swelling. I honestly think I've only gained one or two 'real' pounds, if that.

Thanks you guys !

ps: missycat -- lean muscle is more dense then fat, so you can pack the same amt of weight in a much smaller space when you're lean. that would explain why you've lost inches but not pounds - you've replaced fat with muscle ! congrats on that

What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

I get that muscle weighs more than fat and I know I have gained some muscle. But if my belly was just fat, I would also be losing the fat there and replacing it with muscle. My stomach has firmed up a little but has not shrunk at all. It's just harder which makes it look bigger. The shape of my belly has also changed post opt, it hangs lower and when I sit it kind of droops. I've never been puffy down there before! So it seems like some type of fluid retention to me.

What is the medical cause of swelly belly ?

I am so glad that others are having problems with their bellys. I have been feeling like a fat pig. after surgery my stomach was ok for about 3 weeks. Ever since then, my stomach is huge at the end of the day. Some days it never goes down. I am sometimes scared to eat, because I know my stomach will get larger. I am scared to really do alot of exercise, because I
don't want to cause anymore physical problems. I still get little pains throughout the day and still have a little pain when urinating. Doctors all say to give it time. How much time is enough time? After reading these messages from others who are experiencing the same thing as me, I feel much better. Thank God for this website.

My belly is actually smaller since I restarted my exercise routine. As someone else said, bringing blood to the site aids healing. But if I'm tired, or have overdone it, that's the first place I feel it.

And eat. Now's not the time to develop an eating disorder. It's not even the right time to go on a diet. I tried to do PRISM, and it simply wasn't enough calories, my blood sugar would plummet. Just eat a balanced diet.

I definitely have the swelly belly too (look 5 months pregnant!)! I am almost 3 weeks out and my belly is itching me profusely---not as much the incision, but my protruding belly! Anyone out there having the same symptoms? Also, my skin is soooooo sensitive all over that area!!
