"5 days Post TVH, AP Repair, & Sphincteroplasty

Okay.....I feel absolutely awful! My surgery was in 3/10 which involved a TVH, AP Repair, and an anal sphincteroplasty. I think the pain that I'm having from the TVH and AP repair is what I expected. However, the sphincteroplasty pain is far from what I expected. My dr. did warn me but I guess it's been too long since the childbirth that caused this mess occured (22 years) and I forgot what the pain from a 4th degree lac after the birth of my 12 lb. 12 oz. baby girl was like. I am absolutely miserable and just don't know what is normal and what isn't. I came home from the hospital on 3/13 and went straight to bed. The only time I've been out is to go to the bathroom. It hurts just to sit on the toilet seat so I try to stand when I pee.....ummmm.....I've quickly learned God didn't make it easy for women to pee standing up. What a mess. In fact, I'm concerned that the urine is coming out of more than one opening but I'm not sure. It hurts constantly even on Percocet every four hours and 800 mg. Mortin every 3 hours. It hurts no matter position I'm in. If I knew that this was normal, then I could better deal with it. It's the unknown that I'm not sure about. I haven't looked at my incisions yet and I don't think I want to just based on how it feels. It feels totally deformed in the perineal area. It is so tight that I can barely wipe with the wet wipes I got from the hospital. I'm using the blow dryer but I'm really not sure if I'm keeping it dry enough.

Hi (((Denise)))
I'm sorry you're in so much pain. You had a lot of work done, but there should be some things you can do to find relief from this pain. I had a few of these things done and found it very painful to sit. I had to use a donut pillow and even then did a lot of reclining. It sounds like it might help a little, but would still be hard for you.

I'm sure you're dealing with a lot of swelling, which could be causing stitches to pull. I think it would be wise for you to call your dr today, or the dr on call and ask if they can suggest any comfort measures. You could also get an idea if they feel this constant pain is normal or not. I wonder if it would be helpful if you could ice the stitches? I know it might be a bit awkward, but it might help relieve the swelling and pain. I also found that any kind of wiping was pretty painful. As much as possible I used a peri bottle with warm water to wash myself when I had to use the toilet. Then I could gently pat everything dry. I know it's tedious, especially right at first when everything is so very tender.

Please give the dr a call and make sure there isn't something else going on that could be contributing to the pain. If the dr says s/he thinks this is normal ask for specific measures to help relieve your discomfort. I hope this will get better for you soon. Please let us know what you find out and keep us updated on your progress.

Denise -

I had so much pain after childbirth too. The thing I LOVED that helped the most were those sanitary napkins that you twisted and they made a crack like sound and then they became cold like an ice pack. Did you have those?? They were awesome! They were so soft and they fit btween the legs and up by the bottom snugly with just panties. Maybe you can have someone get you some at a supply store, or maybe the hospital where you had your surgery will give you some.

I agree you should call the Dr and ensure you pain is normal first and foremost.

Well, I don't know what made the difference but I totally changed positions in bed. I was mostly lying on my left side before but was still very uncomfortable. About four hours ago, I completely flipped positions. I am on my right side completely sizeways on my bed. My husband has duty tonight so I get the whole bed to myself. There is so much of a releif from the pain I haven't even had to take my Percocet since about 4:00 p.m. Usually I would have been begging for it after about 2 1/2 hours. I don't know how things are put together down there but lying on my right side seems to have taken all the pressure off of everything in my pelvic area, as well as my hip. The only thing I do keep noticing is a tingling/numbness down my thigh just past my right knee. Not sure if this could be nerve damage or just from the pain meds. I'll mention to the doc on Tuesday when I go in for my wound check.

Thanks for all of the advice. If things turn for the worse again....I'll definitely take the suggestions.

This really is a rollar coaster!!!! I am hurting soooo much yet again!!!! I'm just waiting for the percocet to kick in. OMG.....how long 'til I can at least leave my bedroom for any length of time????

I'm so tired of being in pain and it's only been 5 days. I know I shouldn't complain and I'm still happy I went through with it....but.....this pain is going to drive me insane!!!!

Don't feel bad about complaining. I'm sorry it has gotten worse tonight. Hopefully it will be short lived so you can get some rest. Time will heal. I would still like to see you talk to your dr about this pain. I hope you feel better soon.

I will be talking to my doctor on Tuesday when I go in for a postop wound check. I think it's getting better. I'm hoping that the feel good moments will last longer and longer and the feel bad momment get further and further apart.
