extra strength Tylenol vs. Tylenol w/ Codeine

Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering if anyone knows how much stronger Tylenol w/ Codeine is than Extra Strength Tylenol?

I had my 6-week check yesterday and I asked my doc for a prescription of some sort of pain med because at night (not every night), but some nights I have the burning sensation and my right hip aches still, and on the nights when it's worse, Extra Strength Tylenol does not seem to really help, and then i don't sleep well.

So, I asked my doc for a prescription of something I can take at night when I need it to help take away the pain so I can sleep well.

He prescribed Tylenol w/ Codeine. I haven't picked it up yet (will do that tomorrow).

But, I'm just wondering if anyone knows if there is a big difference between Extra Strength Tylenol and Tylenol with Codeine?

I am sure once I try the Tylenol w/ Codeine, I'll see for myself what the difference is. But, I just know for right now, extra strength Tylenol does not always help the pain.

Thanks!!

extra strength Tylenol vs. Tylenol w/ Codeine

Extra Strength Tylenol is just 500mg of acetaminophen. Tylenol with Codeine comes in two strengths: #3, which contains 300mg acetaminophen and 30mg of codeine; and #4, which contains 300mg acetaminophen and 60mg codeine.

Be careful with the codeine... it's very constipating It can also be habit-forming, whereas plain acetaminophen is not.

I am not a Dr or nurse but I do know that when I have taken Tylenol w/codeine it works wonders. Since it has codeine it will help you sleep. I personally like it & hope it helps you get through your night pain.

Thanks for the info. He prescribed #3 to me.

I know nothing about Codeine. So, I see from what you wrote that the #3 has less acetaminophen than extra strength Tylenol. So, I assume the 30 mg of codeine puts this much higher than just the 500 MG of acetaminophen in x-tra strength Tyleonol?

I feel so ignorant in pain meds because I have never taken them before prior to this surgery (I'm talking about prescribed pain meds).

Thanks for letting me know that they can constipate. I still am taking stool softeners anyway, so I'll just keep taking them.

I figured codeine could be habit-forming... if everything continues the way it is, I doubt I'll need to take this every night. It seems like it's about every 3 nights now I need some sort of pain med, where as 10 days ago, I was still taking Percocit every night before bed (only 1 pill), but starting a week ago or so, I started being able to make it 2 nights with just Tylenol, and then it seems about the 3rd night, the pain is worse, and I need something stronger. So, I'm defintely imroving and getting closer to being off pain meds all together... I think I'm just ultra sensitive to pain... that is all I have come up with (which totally surprises me because I never thought I was going into this)... but for me, trying to go to sleep when I'm not really comfortable is really hard for me. Hopefully soon I'll be at a point where I'll sleep fine w/out having to take anything!

Anyway, so I doubt I'll need to take these Tylenol #3 super often, but I know I have them for the nights when the burning sensation is worse.

My doctor said it could be another 1 - 3 months of this burning and achiness.... ugh!!!! crazy.

Thanks so much for the info.

I am super sensitive to codeine. It causes me vomiting and diarrhea. Funny how meds can be good for one but not another. That's why it is important to always talk with your doctor about yours.
