HRT generic brand vs name brand

I'm on HRT and yesterday I had to change my patch for the first time. At the hospital they gave me the name brand Climara which I didn't have any problems with I think I was almost normal. I had some hot flashes and only cried once. My sweet DH went to fill my prescriptions and got the generic brand. They are like night and day! I'm so emotional and keep crying for no reason. I also like the design better on the other one it is small and thinner. I'm sending my DH to the pharmacy to get the name brand tomorrow I hate crying for no reason!

Has anyone else had the same problem using generic brand vs a name brand?

HRT generic brand vs name brand

sw -

My Dr does think there is a difference between the generic and the name brand. He encouraged me to only get the name brand. I was talking to my BFF about this becasue she is a pharma rep. I was asking her because the name brand costs me alot more. She said that generic drugs don't have to follow the same FDA standards in some respects. She explained some of it like this - a name brand pill for example has to have the ingredients spread evenly throughout the pill and you can ususally cut them in half. But a genreic does not have the same requirement and if you cut that in half each half may not have the same dose.

My Dr also told that the generic Estrace cream (that is the drug we were dsicussing) has many different hormonal additives from the brand. I do think it is different for each drug, including hormones. I am on Premarin orally. For that drug my Dr said I could go on generic Estradiol, but since I feel good we decided to leave that one alone.

I think you should switch back. You've been through alot and since you were feeling good, why not stick with a good thing

(((sw34))) Like you, I started on Climara at the hospital and it worked OK for me (other than that it didn't stay stuck for quite the entire week). When I went to fill the prescription at the pharmacy, they gave me a generic patch. UGH. It was thick, ugly, uncomfortable and did not stay stuck for more than a day. I ended up going back to my DR, who wrote me a prescription for the Vivelle-dot patch, and wrote "no substitutions" on it; the 'dot' and I have lived happily ever after for the six years since then.

The actual hormone in the generics is identical to what is in the name brands. However, the delivery method and materials can be very different, as you found out. I don't think the generic patches are worth even trying. IMHO, the Vivelle-dot is hands down the best patch, with Climara in second place.

I would suggest that you call your DR and ask for samples of both patches to try, and then ask for a new prescription for whichever brand you prefer with "no substitutions" written on it.

I hope this helps.

HRT generic brand vs name brand

Thank you ladies. I agree the generic patch Estradiol is not working. I'll go back to the name brand Climara. The Estradiol patch is thick and the next day it was already coming unstuck. I had a rush and felt dizzy when I put it on and I just didn't feel the same as I did before. Thanks I really love this site there is always someone who has the same experience! Take care!
