Excuse me, do I have LEPROSY?

We had dinner with my BF's family, who knew only that I had recently had surgery, but didn't know any details.

His sister plunks down on the couch next to me and says "Oh, so what did you have done?"

She WINCED, and shrank back with a look on her face like something smelled bad!

Then she got up and never spoke to me again for the rest of the afternoon.

I just wondered if anyone else had gotten such a reaction, as if hysterectomies were highly contagious or not to be discussed in polite company. I am puzzled, and slightly offended. Thoughts?

Excuse me, do I have LEPROSY?

Sorry to hear that you had a negative reaction. Perhaps she was just envious????

I never had anyone react poorly. In fact, I had too many who were envious. LOL!

I was a little concerned about how my boss would react. He had his wife had gone through major fertility treatment (to the tune of $500,000 of their own money) and had just found out that they were pregnant....there were issues with the pregnancy too. But he never winced a bit...instead...he was extremely supportive, called to find out how I was doing, offered to bring me lunch (he lives in another city, so it would have required a trip up here) and he made sure that our drivers and warehouse people were on board to get all of my wine deliveries made for me.

I have to say that my experience was/is very positive.

Wow...sounds to me like she didn't know what "hysterectomy" meant. What a dumbass.

Excuse me, do I have LEPROSY?

LOL....You should have gone over and stood REAL close to her and say something like..

"Darn this rash is itching so bad"

Excuse me, do I have LEPROSY?

Some people can be so rude. Just ignore her ignorance.

Excuse me, do I have LEPROSY?

So sorry you got this reaction- she must envy you!! I am a huge advocate of the hysterectomy (had mine at 31 years old), I am no longer a slave to my ovaries, my uterus and bladder are no longer trying to fall out, and my migraines are nearly history!!! I have a pregnant co-worker who wants a hyster after she delivers because I talk so openly and with so much pleasure about mine. I now know why men never have PMS- life is so much better without those dumb hormone fluctuations!! Every chance you get you should remind her how much better your months are than hers because you don't have to sail the red sea !!!

Excuse me, do I have LEPROSY?

I am 37 years old and just had my hysterectomy and my roomates want to pretend this never happened and they certainly don't know why I am taking a month off of work ( I sell beer and have a job that requires a lot of manual labor). I am not allowed to talk about it and the fact that I had to go home with a catheter completely put them over the edge. Hang in there, talk to those that support you and continue to vent on this website. I know it makes me feel better. Good Luck!

Excuse me, do I have LEPROSY?

Nice roomates, there, BeerPrincess!

I'm thinking you should nonchalantly swing the catheter bag as you stand there talking to them. Make them SEE the pink elephant!
