After about 10 days of that myself, my doctor had me switch to Peri-Colace. Has a laxative in it. That got things moving. But I know how you feel. I was in agony for that first week and a half! I'd say: CALL YOUR DOCTOR if it doesn't happen soon. It probably takes our bodies a few days to get back to normal, and as I found out, the pain meds (I was taking Percoset) tend to cause constipation!

Try a sits bath, this will relax you a bit without the danger of falling in the tub. I have been struggling with this same issue, very frustrating, and this seems to help me.

I spoke with my doc and she started me first with the supository route. No go. She next had me use a fleet enema. Talk about humility. You really get down to the core of your pride, when you have to use one of these babies.

Within 5 minutes, I was FREE! I swear the first one came out sideways!!!

The whole incident yesterday made me sore and tired, so today I am taking it very easy.

Talk to your docs, ladies. You will be given the best advice that route.

I ate bran, yuck. But constipation is a serious thing with abdominal surgery. You must not push, it creates pressure in your abdominal cavity, and well, just don't. If you fail to have a movement soon, you need to see your doctor, perhaps even now. I guess it also depends on what sort of pre-op you had. I did not have any enema or anything, though I did not eat for almost 3 days... the night before, and the day of, pretty much, and then the next day it was gruel... So I think my troops, were a little slow off the mark.

Codeine and its relatives, cause consipation, so you really need to keep an eye on this, being backed up is never good, and it is especially not good with abdominal surgery.

When I had difficulty way back when I ended up taking a glass of prune juice and heating it in the microwave and I had to choke it down but it worked. Something to do with the heat. I have to say I about gagged and I don't think I could have done it again if it hadn't worked. I threw away the bottle of prune juice very happily!!!!! Good luck and it will feel sooooo good when it finally works.

I'm the expert on this one! ha ha. I ended up in the emergency room 5 days post op because I couldn't do pee or poop. I tried colace, senakot, ect but nothing worked and I was in agony. In the ER, they gave me a milk of molasses enema. It worked before they even had it all in! after that, it was colace twice a day which I still take. I also ended up with a foley that I had to leave in for 4 days. All is good in the plumbing department now, just trying to deal with pain and getting SO discouraged! But, good luck to you!

Oh if you "ain't peeing" post-op....there is an issue! They won't let you out of the hospital if you can't pee. Having a BM, well, different animal. I remember, when I had gall bladder surgery, the old way, they wouldn't let you out until you hade one poop too.

I am taking stool softner, not making a BM.
Iwas wondering how long is "too long"
I don't want to get impacted...however u spell it.
so, I'm thinking...do I need a laxative??
I'm so scared to push....
Good luck spokesn'wheels......same boat, same surgery date =)

I had my TAH and on 3/31. I was eating and drinking everything I was told to in order to poop. I was passing gas okay then on 4/4 I passed some gas and OMG nothing else came out. Thought I was going to poop and sat on the throne for hours and this was after taking Milk of Magnesia. At times I felt like I was going to faint or throw up.

Tried to give myself an enema but that didn't work because I so impacted. During my distress my BF, who is nurse called, and convinced me to call the doc again. The on-call doc said to use Dulcolx suppositories and Magnesium Citrate.

Well, I'm telling you that got everything moving and moving and moving. I was totally cleaned out, but feeling much better and lighter!

Now I take Colace 2 to the 3 times everyday.

There's much to be said about having a wonderful poop!
