A fistula is an abnormal connection between an organ, vessel, or intestine and another structure. Fistulas are usually the result of injury or surgery. It can also result from infection or inflammation.

Inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, is an example of a disease that leads to fistulas between one loop of intestine and another. Injury can lead to fistulas between arteries and veins

Post-Op Day 11 - Doctor Visit - Not Good

Thanks all. Oh the pain, dang it all. It is starting to seriously interfere with me having a good time.

I failed my home test last night. Boo hoo. Guess I have to call the GYN and tell him when they get in today.

I have a couple of questions for my hyster sisters:

1. Did any of you show blood and protein and severe dehydration in your urine after your surgery? If so what did they do for it?

2. How do you 'fix' a fistula.

We don't yet know what is going on but I feel confident we will get to the bottom of it. God love my DH, he is a trooper. There he was with me last night checking the status of my home test. A whole lot of men would have considered that TMI.

More to follow. Have a wonderful day all. All my sisters in recovery - REST! Trust me, your body will thank you.

Update 4-15-08

GYN sent me to an urgent appt. with an Urologist. The urinalysis confirmed everything the GYN found yesterday - blood, protein and dehydration and infection.

He then did a cytology (sp?) on me. I thought I was going to die. I am 12 days port-op and swollen and infected. He proceeded to try and stretch my vagina wide open. That didn't work since it was so swollen. Then he entered a tool to stretch it. I started crying. THEN he entered some needle to pry open the uretha because it was swollen shut on my left kidney.

You could hear me screaming all the way to Alaska. THEN I find out that he had never done this procedure on a post-hysterectomy patient AND my GYN had wanted to put me to sleep for it.

Bottom line - my left kidney is currently not functioning properly. No urine is getting out of the left Uretha. Gosh no wonder it is swollen.

I have to go for renal testing.

In the meantime I am calling my GYN and tell him that I won't go back to this guy.

As I am leaving their office I learn that this guy just got out of RESIDENCY SCHOOL.

Oh my Gosh....
