Best food early for early post op days?

I am trying to put together a grocery list and wondered what would be best to eat in the first few days home. I know fibre, fibre, fibre but I don't want to eat too many veggies becuase of the gas etc.

Ideas please and thanks!

Hugs,
Tracy

Best food early for early post op days?

Hi Tracy, for snacks I stocked my pantry with high fiber bars- Fiber1/All Bran/Kashi, prunes, trail mix and my freezer is full of frozen fruit (smoothies), and individual servings of soups-pea/turkey rice/lamb barley. I plan to make a lasagna next week and freeze it in individual servings then I'm off to the Castle!
Hint: only make/buy things you truly enjoy!

Hi Grace,

Those are some great idea. I am actually going to print that off. Smoothies are a wonderful way to getting healthy food in your body after surgery.

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

Hugs,
Tracy

I really did not feel like eating much when I got home, and the amount of food they give you in the hospital is not much so I got used to small servings. I bought those Healthy Choice meals and 100 Calorie snacks.

I agree with Grace. Eat what sounds good to you and what you like. So far I feel fortunate that I haven't had any bowel issues at 3 but then I like raisin bran and veggies......I have avoided anything gassy! Don't want to go there. I was so hungry for scrambled eggs and toast after surgery and lo and behold the first solid meal I got at the castle was just that. It tasted great! I have tried to eat fairly normal with the family but most times smaller portions. I did have trouble at first with the inside of my mouth and OJ........ it was a bit raw from the intibation tube and I must have bit my lip. The acid in the juice took me aback.

Here's to lots of dancing in the Rain Tracy! I'm so tired of SNOW!!!

I wanted softer things, like pudding, bananas, custard, applesauce, & cream of wheat. Before going to the castle, I made a veggie soup & pureed it. I then froze it in 2 cup portions. It was wonderful, lots of flavor & nutrition & easy on the irritated bowels.

Best food is anything you didn't have to cook!!
har har
Honestly, some people, including me, were seriously off their regular diets after surgery, and I don't know why.
I had very little appetite and ate like a toddler- grazing on crackers and dry cereal, and completely off salads.

Point is, you just don't know what you might want!

based on my experience after my foot surgery a couple years ago, I plan to have plenty of peanut butter on hand - both smooth and crunchy ...no need for bread, just use the spoon, but have celery sticks ready, in case i get tired of the spoon. it's easy to prepare (open the jar!), it's high in protein, you've got two texture choices, and if you're feeling a little goofy from the drugs,it's ok, bc even if you drop it, it won't spill.
and I absolutely agree with TunaCat (hi, girl)...when your body goes into healing mode, it tells you what it wants.
