Post Op April 11 . 2008 / Cervix Question

Hello. I just had LAPEX (laparoscopic excision) surgery to remove stage IV endometriosis last Friday. It was necessary to remove my uterus, and my ovaries (high cancer risk) -- these were removed laparoscopically as well, I have five small incisions.

I purposely chose to keep my cervix and the doctor complied with my wishes. However, I wasn't prepared for what I would learn after surgery, that my cervix was cauterized. I was stunned to hear this information because I am so anti-cautery (because many docs use it for endometriosis), and I was not told before surgery that this would be done. I believe this decision should have been mine, and it was something I didn't think to ask because I was overwhelmed and wrestling with my last minute decision to let go of my ovaries because of the high cancer risk.

I understand why the doctor cauterized my cervix, to alleviate cyclical monthly bleeding in the future. I know he must have believed it the best thing to do. However, four days post-op I began having a pinkish-clear, smelly vaginal discharge. I phoned the doctor and I was told it is the result of the cervix cauterization and it should subside in one to two weeks. I believe I should have been told to expect this, again an oversight on his part.

I have read several posts on the subject of cervix cauterization and I feel a little better knowing some of you are pleased that you made this choice. Still, I cannot help wonder if this discharge will really be gone soon. Have any of you experienced this? Also, does anyone know if cauterization affects the elasticity and sensation of the cervix? When I think of cautery/burning, I think "stiffness" and "scarring."

My doctor is a great doctor, but human of course, and therefore not perfect. I will tell him he "dropped the ball" on this one at my follow up appointment.

Thank you for reading and any help is greatly appreciated.

Post Op April 11 . 2008 / Cervix Question

For: Cynjo7

I had a LSH and had my cervix cauterized. I did have some post-op spotting for about 10 days post-op. Some ladies can report a shorter time...and some can report longer.

I am 4 yrs post-op now and other than the (10) days of post-op spotting...I have never had a mini-period in post-op. For me, I do not notice any difference in the feeling of the cervix. My larger fibroid sat right on top of my cervix..so for me, I was glad my Dr. decided to cauterize my cervix.

Hope that helps.

Sending best wishes~

Mary, thanks for sharing your positive experience. I need that right now. I hope I will be able to one day soon say "I am glad", too.
