Itching like I've never itched before.

I've looked and looked to see if there was anything on this subject out here but this must be a non-typical reaction. I am now 7 months post op and for the most part doing great. About 2 months ago I started having these itching fits that would drive me nuts. It usually started at night and around my feet, ankles and legs. At first I thought it was just dry skin because I tend to get that on my legs in the winter. It started getting worse and more often so I started looking for other causes. Different soap, eating different. Started looking for patterns. When it started, what I'd touched recently. There was nothing. It started getting worse and more frequent. Sometimes it would start around my feet, sometimes my back, sometimes even my scalp. It would start in the morning, at work, while working out, anytime and anywhere. I would itch so bad I had to keep my fingernails cut down to nothing or I would have literally scratched myself raw. I finally got some generic Benadryl and that stopped the itch. THANK GOD!
I finally went to the doctor and all he told me was to try Zyrtec so I didn't have to take it quite as often. No explaination as to why I was suddenly itching like crazy. When I finally went to see my regular family doctor for a bad cough I mentioned something to him.
Ladies, we are not crazy. It is a histamine reaction to the change in hormone levels. He said it may last up to a year but if it lasts longer than that we will take look at my hormone levels. Until then Zertec is now my best friend. It goes everywhere with me because I never know when or where it will start.

Itching like I've never itched before.

I too am plaqued by itching. Mine started the day after surgery. I've taken benedrill, steriods, hydroxizine. they attributed mine to a reaction to the anesthesia but I did have some unexplained itching prior to surgery that may have been due to perimenopause now that you mention a drop in hormone levels. All that itching is sooooo frustrating!

I'm sorry your going through it but it's nice to know that I'm not crazy... I was beginning to think I was!

I am so sorry you are having the "ichys". Are you taking hormones? If so, what are you taking! When I was in the hospital, I had the itchys and the doc thought it was from the percocet. But when I take it at home, it is fine so maybe it was hormonal too.

Wow, thank you for sharing that info. I too have had this terrible itching on my ankles, knees and feet. Drives me crazy.

I was wondering what was causing it. Thanks!

I can relate

My boyfriend came over one weekend and asked me what thorn bushes I'd been walking thru. That's when I started cutting my nails down. It was worse than when I had the chicken pox.

No HRT for me. Menopause symptoms have been minimal so didn't want to go there. Having the itchies now as a matter of fact. Just took my friend Zyrtec and it should be fine soon. This time it started on my face. That was new.

Wow thanks for that information. I have had itchies really bad. Drives me crazy. My DH will scratch my back and as soon as he stops it starts again. I can not take bebedrill as it wires me. Perhaps I will try Zertec and see if that help. What a great day that would be not to itch.

Itching like I've never itched before.

I started with the itchies this week and it is driving me nuts. I too have been scratching so bad I thought I was going to draw blood.

I'm glad to know I'm not going crazy and that there is a reason for it. Luckily it wasn't too bad yesterday but if it continues I will contact my doctor.
