Still in pain 3 1/2 weeks post op ... also, stitches poking through incision.

I had my total hysterectomy (uterus, tubes and cervix) on the 28 March. I still have pain. It is hard recovering whilst living alone. (as i have other disabilities as well eg/ CFS)
I have had disposable stiches. On the outer as well. There is a couple of stiches at the beginning of the cut that have not come out/dissolved- DO i pull them out?? (as they are very painful). I am due for my next appt with the surgeon on the 21 May. I am soooo tired too. I am 36 years old and live in New Zealand. I had to have mine because of medical error. I was on the depo provera innjection for 8 years-it has caused osteoporosis. So i needed complete contraception, but had to get off the depo. Also i was told i could not have children as with my first and only i developd VERY SEVERE post natal depression and pychosis-was told a 95% chance of reoccurance. Anyone else had resons like these for a hysterectomy-it was recommended by my docter intially and then the specialists at the womens hospital.
Also i have been having bad night sweats, hot flushes, grumpy, tearful- i have read that even thought the ovaries are kept -you can go into surgical menopause through shock to the body??Any ideas??
Any supportive comments would be great , thankyou, Carole.

Dont take this wrong, but i am absolutely shocked that they would use a hysto for birth control. i know medical care is different everywhere but still. did u have other gyn issues besides the depo caused osteoporosis? i mean i dont know alot about the whole medical part of it, just surprised me. i had to go through alot before they would LET me have a hysterectomy. im sorry you are having problems hun, i hope it gets better soon!

Hi Carol
Welcome to Hystersisters! I'm sorry you're having so much pain. Three weeks is still pretty early in recovery, so the pain is very likely from being up and doing more than your body is ready for, especially since it sounds like you're doing a lot for yourself. If you can get off your feet and rest a little more it should help.

The tiredness is pretty common too, especially this early. Have you had a chance to read the Checkpoints? You will find a lot of good information and general guidelines for each stage of your recovery.

I don't think pulling the stitches is a good idea. If possible I think you should call your dr and ask what you could do for this. I have heard of women having them clipped off and maybe that is something you could do or have a friend do for you. Ask your dr about this for sure.

You're right about the ovaries often going into shock and causing menopausal symptoms for a while. This happened to me too, but it cleared up in a few weeks. Everyone is different in how long this might take. Hang in there and know that the emotions are normal too and will get better with time.

I hope you get to feeling better soon. It's good to have you join us. Keep us posted on your progress.
's, Rita
