Questions about barium enema

I'm having a barium enema tomorrow and was hoping some of you could answer some questions for me.
The day before did you do a liquid diet and Fleet prep?
How did you feel afterwards?
Was it painful at all?

Questions about barium enema

Hi-I have been an x-ray tech for over 28 years and have performed many of these procedures over the years. I never had one. I will tell you, you will feel full like you need to have a BM but the important thing is to try to hold it in. If you get a good radiologist, he/she will put the barium in slowly and it should be more tolerable. There are 2 ways to do the procedure: barium only or barium w/air. Either way you will feel somewhat full and bloated. Try your best, that's all they can ask for. Try to think of somewhere else you would rather be. Hopefully, you get someone talkative to keep your mind occupied during the test. It doesn't really last very long, but it may seem a long time. As for the prep, every facility is different in what prep they use. You should feel ok after, maybe a little bloated if they use air. Make sure you eat right after and that usually will help with the gas discomfort. Good luck to you. Let me know how you make out.

Questions about barium enema

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!! I've done my clear liquids all day. I was suppose to do my Fleet prep at 4:00 but I bumped it up to 2:00 because I have to be at the Hospital at 7:00 tomorrow so I want to go to bed early tonight.

Questions about barium enema

Ok. Worst test I've had to date (and I've had a lot!) There was a balloon on the end of the tube that was inserted that was inflated so it "held in the beruim solution". Once it started to flow my colon started spasming. It felt like really bad cramps you would have before a BM. You can't get up and walk it off. You're laying on a cold metal procedure table. It really didn't last just felt like it did. I had a great tech. She was very, very comforting. That really helped.
The found out after my hysterectomy that I too have diverticullitis. It's not "text book" though. My bowels and BM's are perfectly normal, I have no fever or chills. I just have pain in my lower left back. They think adhesions from my c-sections may be constricting my colon causing the diverticulitis. They may have to take out part of my colon. I have to wait to see if anything shows up from this test.

I would have to say that is probably the worst test out there. It sounds as if you had a good tech and you made it through it. I hope your results are good and that you don't need to have surgery. I will keep you in my prayers.
