my pre-pre-op appt today

Went to the urogyn this morning. I had a urodynamics test last week. He told me that my bladder is functioning well - no retention or spasms - but that I have hardly any pelvic floor muscle support for my urethra. So the test did show that I have genuine stress incontinence. He is going to to the TOT (Monarc) sling on me. He said he's done about a thousand of these procedures.

Nothing's changed with the hyst, it's still going to be a TVH, but switch to LAVH if he can't get my uterus out.

I have been really paranoid about the insurance company approving everything and he was shocked and said it wouldn't be an issue. He said he's glad that they do question it, b/c some women get unnecessary hyst's but that mine was definitely not unnecessary.

I will only have ONE overnight stay in the hospital. Anyone else only stay one night? Not that I mind, I'd much rather be home.

I asked him if he "looks around" inside before he does the hyst, and he said that with a TVH, he can only view the ovaries and tubes and bladder afterwards. He will only remove an ovary if it looks diseased.

I asked about being anemic, and he said I would be cross-matched before surgery and they would reserve 2 units of blood in case. He said that blood is much safer now than it used to be and risk of getting HIV or Hep C is around 1 in 2 million now. My hemoglobin is 9.7, a bit low, but he said around 10 is okay for surgery.

I also asked some lingering questions about my sonohystogram that were bothering me. When I had that done, they were unable to distend my uterus with the saline. He said that this was because I'd never had children. My uterus isn't stretchy. They were also unable to view my fallopian tubes, and he said they are really difficult to differentiate from bowel, and that was nothing to worry about. I also asked why my uterus has a spherical shape (it's roughly 10cm x 9 cm x 10cm) - he said it's either the fibroids or possibly adeno.

Thanks hystersisters for giving me so many ideas on things to ask. Otherwise I would have gone in, not asked enough, and left with a lot of loose ends.

I'm glad your appointment went well! I had a TVH (no repairs) and I only stayed one night. I was glad to go home. I hope you have a very uneventful surgery and recovery. Your day will be here before you know it!
