side effects

I had my surgery about a week ago and started taking estradiol three days ago. The side effects seem to vary from day to day in intensity. I'm just wondering when they will begin to even off. I'm not sure I like the way this makes me feel. Also, I'm wondering how soon I should expect the "real" menopause symptoms to start. Some women I've talked to have had the symptoms almost right away and others haven't started for about a month or two.

Hi!

You're very early in your recovery and it's common at this point to experience fluctuations in hormone levels. Your body is adapting to a new source of hormones while depleting the hormones your ovaries made, plus you're recovering from major surgery.

What side effects are you experiencing with your estradiol? Are you taking it in pill form or some other method of delivery? You can experiment with the timing of the dose if you're using a pill, cream or gel form of estradiol. Sometimes changing the time of day it's used makes a difference.

It takes time for any hormone therapy to reach optimum levels so try to give it time to work. As for when to expect menopause symptoms, that varies from woman to woman. Some never experience them because they are lucky enough to find the right hormone therapy on the first try. Others will experience them as the hormones made by the ovaries deplete.

It might be useful to keep a journal of any symptoms you are experiencing. You can share it with your doctor who can adjust your dose, if necessary, so that you will feel better.

Best wishes for your recovery!
