Home now...allergic to meds

Hi, everyone! LAVH on 8/3. BIG cyst on my ovary. Lots of endo. Had to take my uterus out in pieces doc said. Yuck! Came home Friday 8/5.

I'm doing ok. I had a terrible time with the pain meds. I'm allergic to morphine, can't take Vicodin and the stuff they gave me in the castle (oxycodone?) made me itch so bad I thought I would take my skin off! They finally gave me a shot of Benedril IV and it got better. I asked my doc to just give me codeine but IT makes me sick to my stomach and gives me hallucinations so I'm just taking ALEVE now. GOSH! I feel all oogie but I'm getting around ok. I go back for my post-op tomorrow. I break out in a sweat over every little thing. They have me on Ortho-EST, one pill a day. The gas pain is the worst. I'm drinking tons of water but I have no appetite at all. I guess maybe I'll lose some weight? Well, gotta go back to bed now. Don't even want to watch tv. Sorry I'm so glum...

Oh, I'm so sorry you're having the same trouble I did with pain meds!

I couldn't take ANYTHING without getting sick, so just gave up and roughed it without them. Not fun. I wish I could offer some words of wisdom, but there's not much I can say other than I know what you're going through, and I'm very sorry.

As far as appetite, I didn't eat anything for almost 2 weeks. My frantic hubby FINALLY convinced me to drink some Ensure, which wasn't bad. You may want to try to make yourself drink something like that, just to get some nutrition in you.

Drinking lots of water and fruit juices will help with the gas, as will walking. At this point, you won't be able to do much walking, but several short, slow walks per day will help (maybe even just around your house for now, until you feel stronger).

Hang in there - it's rough right now, but it DOES get better!

Thanks for your reply.. Gosh, I'm so messed up I didn't even put the right dates for my surgery. I had it done last Wednesday, Aug 1st and came home Friday, the 3rd. I'll be okay. Ha ha!

I'm going to send my DH for some Ensure or maybe some Instant Breakfast. I remember I liked that. I forgot to take my vitamins since I've been home. I hope they don't constipate me or give me any more gas. But I think I need them. I ate some canned pears. They were light and good.

Thanks for your support. Everyone here is just GREAT!
Bye for now..

Welcome home Cass. I drank ensure also...a couple of cans a day until my appetite picked up. Choc. was my favorite and kept them chilled.

Pain meds and anest. makes me itch like crazy too...always have to have benedryl.

I had some gas...but not a lot. Some ladies take gas x which is OTC. I watched what I ate and drank...no carbonated beverages and no gasy foods for awhile

Sending healing thoughts your way.

Welcome Home Cass. I'm so sorry you're having such a hard time of it

As far as the goes, Dot and Chemyn are right: walking, drinking water and juices and avoided carbonated foods and drinks will help. Hopefully, it will improve soon.

As far as your appetite, or lack of it, goes, I'm thinking that, maybe, you're drinking so much water that you are "hiding" your hunger. Try and not drink to the point that you are bloated. Maybe DH can fix up some of your favorite food, in order to intice you to eat?

Hopefully you'll start feeling better soon.

Take care.

Just an idea

Maybe something bland like mashed potatoes or a baked potato.

That's my comfort food and usually stays on the stomach fairly well. Also, saltines might help settle your stomach.

Sure hope you feel better soon.

hi cass.. i hope you are feeling better.. i had a lavh on 8/2.. my uterus also came out in pieces as it was larger then expected with (according to my dr.) "zillions" of fibroids.. i was on oxycontin once they took me off the morphine and then they gave me percocet, but right now i am trying to survive on tylernol because i just feel so much better and the painkillers have so many side effects. i am also sweating all the time, but i kept my ovaries, so i don't know if that is just the heat wave or something else going on.. anyway.. i am feeling better everyday. i walked around the block today and i think my bowels are working well now.. so i guess i consider myself very lucky.. i even went out to dinner tonight...
