Bladder spasms, urination problems, bowel problems

It's been about 15 years since my hysterectomy.....I've been under the care of a Pelvic Floor specialists for several years....the bladder spasms are more than I can bare....I've been using belladonna/morphine rectal suspositories to control the spasm agravation....in addition, I need to catheterize on a regular basis...my Pelvic Floor specialists won't return my calls for an office visit to talk about other treatment options....this web site is a blessing...I wasn't aware that other people suffer with the same problems that I've had for years.....reading some of the e-mails made me realize that some help may be available out there......

chetterbug--

TAH/BSO means total abdominal hysterectomy/ bilateral salpingoopherectomy. It means you have had a hysterectomy done through a belly incision and you had both tubes and ovaries removed. (bilateral=both sides, salping=fallopian tubes, oopherectomy=ovaries).

To navigate throught he website, you can see the tabs at the top of the page that look like little folder tabs? Click on them to go where you want to go. Most people go to "Forums" to find the other places they want to post. You can also go to "Resources" or "Support" for many answers.

I often use the Google Search in the little blue rectangle near the top right side of the page to look for posts about what other people have already said about a topic. I find that the single most helpful thing here almost every day. You could type in 'bladder spasms' and get quite a few hits there that would help you research your topic here at Hyster Sisters.

I do hope you find the help you need.........

Bladder spasms, urination problems, bowel problems

Hi

I too have severe bladder spasms for which I take medication. I live in the UK and go back to hospital in Sept for urodynamics and a flexible cystoscope with a view to treating my bladder with botox....maybe that's an option for you.

The VVF in my signature refers to 2 vesico vaginal fistula repair surgeries. When I had my hysterectomy the gyne very kindly left me with a 2cm hole in my bladder.

Donna, are you able to tell me the medication you're using...I started using Belladonna/Opium rectal supositories which seem to work, however the Mid East problems restricted the availability of the opium so morphine was used....of course the morphine was proportioned to the amount in opium....it kinda works but nothing like opium.....opium is now available again so I'm going to ask my doctor if I can switch back to opium...is your medicine helping control the spasms and how often do you need to take it???? I'm desperate for some relief....plus I'm still dealing with the urine problems....I get a foley catheter about every month which last about 3-4 weeks and then I need to take it out for about a month or so....still catheterizing during the day......

I am destritutol XL 4mg x 2 a day. I still get spasms but if I dont take my tablets till late in the day boy do I know about it. The side effects arent that great...stomach upset, dizzyness, blurred vision and dry mouth are just a few of them but it's better than the bladder spasms.

Can I ask do you know why you have bladder symptoms...did you get a bladder injury during surgery?

I had severe bladder problems until I started taking 1.25 Premarin. Each month got better & when I try to cut back on the estrogen, the bladder problems get bad again. I know hormones control acidity in the bladder & elsewhere, so maybe that is the reason for it. The doctors / urologists are totally unaware of this connection. I had the cystoscopy & extreme pain & spasms & went to many doctors & specialists. Not until I stated taking the Premarin did it go away.
Hope this helps someone else.

I already take HRT as I dont have any ovaries... they had to remove my last one when they did my last VVF repair. Thanks for your advice tho. You will see from my signature that I sustained a bladder injury during my hysterectomy and had two repair surgeries on the bladder. This is why it spasms.

Chetterbug,
I'm having no problem getting Belladonna and Opium suppositories here in the Northeast. Why did they substitute morphine for the opium?
I can only use the suppositories for a few days before I start having side effects that bother me. Once when I was having a particularly painful time and was using the suppositories every 8 hours around the clock for 3-4 days I ended up in the ER with chest pain and shortness of breath. I had had leg pain previously which immediately stopped when the chest pain and shortness of breath started. I thought I had a Pulmonary embolism. Once I stopped the suppositories all the symptoms went away. I only use them now when the pain is intolerable and then only for 1-2 doses max.
