How long to keep taking estrogen?

I started taking Premarin a week after my TAH. I didn't have any meno symptoms before or after. I was told by my Dr that I would only be on them short term; no more than 5 years. I hope to be off them after my six week appt! I feel fine, no side effects, I just don't want to take anything. After reading some of these posts, I'm confused why so many are on them for so long. Again, Dr said short term(safer) and just to get me through the hump of meno-gradually get into the meno process. Educate me ladies!

:)

hi, kazbar.

If you have had your ovaries removed, then your dr. is not being very smart nor has he/she educated themselves on surgical menopause enough.

The 5 year thing is for regular menopause in which women still have ovaries. But mostly it's to pretect them from being sued by going against the recommendations (I think).

Studies have shown that the ovaries put out estrogen (and other things) for women well into their 80's. I feel those of us who no longer have our ovaries could continue with ERT until death as long as there were no cancer issues. But you must remember, all of us should remember, estrogen doesn't cause cancer...it may feed a cancer, but sugar feeds cancer also. So, if you stop hormones our of fear of cancer, shouldn't you also stop anything that will up your insulin? No tumorous cancer can survive and grow without insulin.

(Sorry...soap box favorite of mine! )

I have several older female relatives and acquaintances that have taken premarin since their hyster and still do, with no consquences. Once again...it's a personal decision....NOT your doctor's decision.

How long to keep taking estrogen?

Thanks 6andcounting. That makes sense. Thankfully I don't have the cancer issues. The reason for my TAH was polyps and I also have cysts in the breast, which a specialist said could be due to estrogen levels. The premarin may prove to level them out and avoid future growths. I'll find out at my next mammo. Each year a few more usually pop up. I'll give it time and ask more questions when I go for my 6 week post op. Are blood tests done to check levels after taking HRT for a period of time? What can I expect. As I said before, I haven't had any problems with it. The only thing has been extremely dry skin and I don't know what thats from.

How long to keep taking estrogen?

You'll probably have to ask for it...I've yet to have a doctor offer to check them.

How long to keep taking estrogen?

I'm on the same dose, started a week after TAH. I haven't had any problems. I'm still learning about all this myself and I'm wondering if you don't mind me asking why and or were you having problems that you went on them after 5 years without them.

Should'nt something like that be checked? Especially when taking meds to regulate them! They check for everything else
